In a week's time I will be tutoring a professor to speak in Nepali. Like most of us my mother-tongue is Nepali and I read and write in Nepali very well. My question was: What books/materials is available online for a nepali tutor to teach her student?

Any help on this matter will be appreciated. I will mostly be teaching the prof to speak in Nepali. No writing will be involved and we will be starting from the basics.

If you are serious I may be of help; because as part of my job, I teach Nepali too. We have our own in-house resoures but I can post some to you if required.

Our books are based on English grammar and we teach upto 'Minimum Working' level in 10 weeks. There are 5 levels: Survival, Minimum Working, Professional Working, Advanced and Native. As you can see, in British Education Frame Work, a foreign language can only be taught upto level 4.

Jhamjham Pareli, could u give you please post more sites? The one u listed above is very helpful, or u could send me an email about the way u teach. I have never done this kind of teaching so I am don't know how to go about it.

Nepali Alphabet:
You should give enough time to the basic things than taking him/her to the complex words. I think 2-3 hours tutoring + 2-3 hours self-practice will be enough.
1. Write consonants "Ka" "Kha" .... "Gyan" and teach him/her how to pronounce it. Tell him/her how each syllabus has a vowel attached to it. Then,
2. Write "A" "AA".... and teach her how to make vowel sounds
3. Now combine those consonants and vowels in very simple words, e.g. Kaka, Mama, Aama, Baba, Dada, Didi, Babu etc. I suggest you to start with relationship words while giving enough time to memorize those words.

Mastering steps 2-3 is very important because he/she will have to write the Nepali words in the roman style as you teach him/her at next levels.

Then you can go ahead with
Nouns: very common words like Bhat, Dal, Alu, Ghar, etc. etc.
Pronoun: timi, tapain, tan, ma, mero, timro, afno, etc.
Verbs: Don't worry about correct tense and subject verb matching. Maile khayo = maile khayen... everybody will excuse a khaire when he says maile khayo.
however - differentiate the meaning of khanchhu and khayo (tense wise).
Practice 10-15 common verbs.
Preposition: ma, tala, mathi, agadi, pachhadi, muntira, mastira (they will find muntira/mastira funny and learn and remember those words easily)
Adjectives: Color - rato, seto, khairo, kalo, nilo, hariyo ... don't feed to much with 35 colors that you use to describe the color of lipsticks; measurement - sano, thulo, barabar, lamo, chhoto, utrai (let him/her say "ma dherai lamo chhu" for few days and correct later).

Based on my experience of Teaching nepali on and off to foreigners, i suggest the following:

1. Relax, its your language and you know it well enough.
2. Start with translating simple sentences in three tenses: eg. Ram goes to london - Ram london januhuncha; Ram went to london - Ram london janu bhayo and so on...... (janu may be a slightly irregular verb in teh sense that it changes from janu to gayo whereas khanu (and most verbs) would change to khayo. And see where it leads to.
3. Ask him/her to write a (simple) paragraph in English and then translate it.
4. Encourage to use the more respectful "janu bhayo" instead of gayo for the sake of simplicity and uniformity.

SEe what happens after that. Ask them to jot down things and while starting next week, start from where u had left. I think it would be wise to conduct about 1-2 hours of class per week.

Again, the above are based on my own experience. I never suggested or looked at any book and never planned any classes beforehand. Goodluck
