In my opinion,this song should be our national anthem. I dont think there is anyone here in this forum, who doesnt like this song. if i get into fight with anyone, i sing this song to myself and out of nowhere, this gorkhali gets pumped up to beat the livin shit out of him. it is that joshilo.

Hmmm... yes I agree, the current national anthem is concentrated wholly on the king and not on the nation or its citizens. I mentioned this to one of my friends, who happens to be shah by the way, and he said king is Nepal and Nepal is king, therefore giving praise to king is like giving praise to Nepal. Upon hearing that I gave him a big wedgie that his grandkids would not forget.

Continuing with the same thought, has anybody considered Nepali flag? What are its symbolic meanings. The same Shah friend of mine opined that "chandrama" and "surya" are there because the royal family are the descendents of "chandrabamshi" and "suryabamshi." This leads me to believe that, much like the national anthem, the flag too is more symbolic of the royalties and less or non of Nepal and Nepalis.

What say you?

our flag is unique the way it is. Flag is not symbolic to the king whatsoever. Red color denotes gorkhali blood, blue denotes ghairai as of ocean and white symbolizes peace. Surya denotes fury and moon denotes peace i think. The 2 triangles denotes the mountains i think. can anyone confirm?

I agree with cool on the issue of flag. But yes, our national anthem needs to be changed. When I was in school, lined up in the sun to sing 'my' national anthem, I always wondered why there was not a single word about Nepal, and how every 'sabda' was solely concerned with praisnig our monarchs. And as ma mareko chaina says, if a nepali wins a gold at olympics -- here i am being highly optimistic, i know-- and subsequently the nepali anthem is played, what can the athlete be thinking then? I am sure he will feel more revulsion towards our vaunted king than pride on witnessing the hoisting of the Nepali flag! And if h/she cries during the process, how are we to intrepret the tears? Falling with a sincere gratitude for nepal, or in lamenting our lack of national identity?

i was a peace corps volunteer in palpa district. i worked as an english teacher and everyday, my students sang what i thought was a wonderful anthem: gauchha git nepali...." this song praises not the monarchy, but the beauty of nepal, the rivers, and the himals. my understanding is the maoists enforced this song because the old national anthem does praise the king. does anyone else know this song- or know what i'm talking about?

ya sounds good. that should ultimately decrease the monarch power.
However, about the flag, have you guys noticed that the moon is higher than the sun. Symbologically, doesn't it seem a little unnatural? The sun always starts the day. The sun is what the gives warmth and the food (photosynthesis, even if ancient ppl didn't know this they definitely knew that sunlight was essential for plants to grow.) I remember hearing that this position of the sun and the moon shows the victory of chandrabamsi (all of us) over the suryabamsis like several centuries ago. And chandrabamsis (aka we) made the flag to stamp our victory which eventually ended up as the Nepali flag.
And I think the historians did an impromptu sa-prasanga byakhya about the colors on the flag. Still it is a beautiful flag.

naulo nepal, thank you! that's the song i'm talking about! it's perfect! and the nepali flag is also beautiful, because it is so unique. i certainly don't think of the king when i see it. i think of nepal and its beautiful landscape and beautiful people.
