It's been 5 years since I received green card so it's time to decide whether I want to apply for citizenship or not. It is hard to give up my Nepali citizenship but it is likely that I will be living in the US since things are not getting any better in Nepal anytime soon.

Do you recommend getting citizenship or is it better to have green card only.

What are the pros and cons of getting citizenship?

Decisions are always hard to make on this case. My advice is Go for it.

Nepal should be in your heart not in the paper.

Good Luck

What about inheritence of property in Nepal? That's gotta be taken into consideration too, surely?

yeh ... i think it is 30 bucks for 30 days visa.
NRN card  (which cost about 500 bucks and valid for 10 years) may be an option for ppl who wants to stay for longer period and invest in nepal.

not sure about the inheritance of the property. its a good question.

ya i don't know man... if you have no money in Nepal it's alright i guess. but if you have properties , say house and some land they usually add up to corores. and it will take years to save that kind of money with your hard work in the U.S.  sooner or later Nepali govt can find out and if someone files a legal suit in maal karyalaya then you don't have any right to hold property in Nepal, hoina ra?let's talk about this... i mean i don't do much travelling, and i am ok to be treated like a Nepali by airport employees than to lose hundred of  thousands of dollars that my fam saved up for me. plus i don't think you'll get the same treatment as a naturalized darkie citizen as a natural born white or black would get.. so i don't know.. what do you guys say?

Thanks all for your valuable comments. In one hand it's difficult to give up Nepali nationality but then when you think about it,  I can always say I'm from Nepal since noone can take that away coz that's where I'm from

Even if I did take citizenship, how would anyone know that I have taken it? I would still have my Nepali passport so how could I lose my property in Nepal. I think as long as I don't tell anyone I can have the best of both worlds.

Am I wrong? Is there anyways Nepali govt would know I have become US citizen???

When you have lived in US long enought to become a US citizen then you should probably give up your greed for family property in Nepal.

If you have decided to live in the U.S., go for it. No m,eor second thought is necessary. It doesnot hurts you. U.S. Citizen speaking here.

Two things i disagree with Nepali in U.S.:

1. Parent's Property Inheritence: Why should you eye for part of wealth from your parents back in Nepal? You are in this Great nation to make it on your own. Just leave that welath to your siblings.

2. Nepali Politics in U.S. : After more than 2 decades of Democracy, Nepal has been worse than before. Politicians ruined the country for their personal benefits. That makes you compelled to migrate away from Nepal for your better future. Then, why you should be part of the politics that made you leave your country? Why are you spending your hard earned dollars to follow so-called leaders of Nepal? Aren't you encouraging them to f-uck Nepal even more?

I think a lot of people here believe giving up Nepali Citizenship means giving up Nepali nationality. Even if you hold that blue passport, you can always call yourself a Nepali and do for Nepal as any Nepali Citizen would, and always be a Nepali (Look at some of the Indian, Italian and other ethnic groups in the US). Of course, you'll have to part with the Nepali statewood which is better as you are not liable to the Nepali government .

Why're some of you so quick to make assumptions and judge others? The question related to property inheritance is pretty valid because a number of soon-to-be citizens are 1. only child, 2. have brought their parents to the US/live with their parents.

It's not necessarily about greed, per se, is it? If your parents own properties worth over 5-10 crore in Nepal, would you rather the govt. confiscated it?

Perhaps a simple answer to tackle an issue pertaining to that issue would be more helpful and welcomed.

If you get NRN card then you can hold property in Nepal, you can do business and invest in Nepal. Only thing you can't do is involve in Politics and vote and I don't think anyone here is interested on this either.

Kosh R. Koirala Reporting from Nepal
Kathmandu, 14 January, (Asiantribune.com):

Nepal government has introduced a new policy that will enable Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) living across the globe to own limited amount of property in Nepal and also enter their country of origin without any visa requirements.

The policy will come into effect once the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) distributes separate identity cards for the purpose later this month. The ID cards will be issued from both the ministry in Kathmandu and at Nepali missions abroad.

Officials at MoFA said the ministry is currently working on a war footing to complete the preparations so that the identity cards will be available to NRNs by the end of this month.

The decision to provide such identity cards comes in line with the Non-Resident Nepali Act and Regulations.

According to the NRN Regulations, NRNs will have to apply for the identity cards and the ministry and the missions will act on the applications within seven days. Such cards will be valid for 10 years in the case of non-resident foreigners of Nepali descent and for two years for non-resident Nepalis.

The NRNs have been asking the government to provide them dual citizenship to help make them easier to invest in Nepal
