why is it so surprising.. there were so many incidents that two girls getting married 18-20 years ago..that time i used to wonder why two girls are getting married..now may be this is first time happening in nepal (publicly).. One thing i know ..we are social animals ..there are certain criteria society dictates.May be right may be wrong..but what i feel most part society is there for reasons and social laws and norms is must. Now people might be too open .too liberal and say that gay should be allowed to marry.and this and that..but remember this kind of activities do bring lot of other problems not just gay marriage.. well it is personal choice and Law shouldn't dictate on the sexual preference of one. But i personally do not enourage though i am not agaist it.If i say i am against it people might still call be bush fan .hhahaha seriously i am liberal but with some reservations..

Lootekukur, my friend, I am smiling at the 'food for thought' comment. The last time you said such a thing, there was a bit too much food on the table and a lot of it was unrelated to thought! LOL. Anyways, I don't think it's a fair to seek any sort of moral equivalence between gay marriage and marriage with animals. Besides distracting from the real issue in the debate, which in my opinion is human equality and dignity, your point in some ways dimishes and mocks the sufferings of gays in places like Nepal and elsewhere who have suffered pretty badly at the hands of homophobes who use arguments very similar to the one you put forth. I know you are not a homophobe so don't take my point personally. Yes, it is for a society to decide what is acceptable behavior. If a society should decide zoosexualism is acceptable, then they have every right to. It may not be to everyone's taste but that's their decision. I am realist and realize society will not see gay marriage as 'normal' for a long time. I live in a state, as do many other Sajhaites, where gay marriage is legal and some of my collegues, friends and relatives are gay. And they are as 'normal', if not more, than the others in society who are heterosexuals. I haven't met anyone attracted to animals yet, but I'd be willing to at least hear them out, even if I did not see eye to eye with them :) Just a thought.

well i am not surprised...it may be surprising for my grandmom though.. similarly, if 10 years down the line a girl gets married with a dog, lots of people may get surprised. but then many may argue its a part of the evolution-human nature... i am NOT against gay marriage...i will vote to legalise it in nepal, if need be. but i would like to see a more certainity on this aspect so that we won't be surprised anymore. and concerned people don't have to fight for "weird" (as of now..i could not think of a better word sorry) marriages. is it possible? It is ... but will take time. Issues like these often take one or two generations to resolve.

oops the last comment was for ImI, captain haddock hahaha....that "food" went wasted hehe i realised it too...may be i should barge myself on putting too much on the table....we are not that voracious it seems hehe..:P well, i appreciate your comment... and your arguments sound understandable. in fact my views resonate with yours!... i am just trying to look at the bigger picture without rambling and digressing (which i may potentially do...hehe..so check me on that). i mean there is no restriction to human emotions..it's all about respecting others..that's why i feel gay marriage should be legalised. but should it be marginalised? that's my question. i mean do we really want to fight for "weird" (of all kinds..even with animals) marriages... let me be more blunt...i know this may invite me trouble or may offend many..but i am just taking my chances as this is our sajha. what if tomorrow say handful of people raise their voice for legalising "sibling marriage" . i mean what if a brother wants to marry his sister or vice versa. it's NOT impossible, is it? i mean let's see things on "social" vs "legal" perspective. can we justify marriages that have all kinds of "weirdness" (at the moment. i am sorry for this word again). LooTe

Lootekukur, what would Sajha be like without your good spirits and humour? :) I shudder to think ...:-> I am not sure what the law technically says about marrying your direct sibling, but marrying cousins is common practices amongst Muslims worldwide, some Thakuris and Gurungs and a few others in Nepal, and even amongst some in rural America. The taboo associated with it is social. I doubt very many prosecuters in America will spend their time chasing people who marry their sisters. That sort of attraction is very rare - certainly much more rare than homosexuality. It is believed 10% of the populations is gay. Incest is still a crime and I don't have too much of a problem with that. The key thing here is when you legislate morality, there is always subjectivity involved, and there will never be a right or wrong answer. That is why I think arguments on this subject turn out to be a waste of time a lot of the times. For me gay marriage is a real issue that affects a significant section of the population and should be dealt with. Trying to create philosophical arguments out of non-issues is, in my opinion, a futile excercise that leads to nowhere.

Loote kukur le aajkal pagal pagal kura garcha. How could marrying an animal can be called legal. A marriage can only takes place when both parties agree to marry . Do you think animal knows anything about marriage? And we should not have problem when two person of same sex wants to stay together. And its pity that we have rediculing racist attitude towards homosexual . If they cannot like any person of opposite sex then we cannot force them to love person of opposite sex. Do you ever redicule any person who is born handicapped? Do you ever redicule a blind person because they cannot see like you? Do you redicule person who cannot walk like you ?

bidhan, well...if animal sex is possible why not marrying with animals? hehe...and it's not too hard to get their consent for marriage. it's just a matter of "nod"...these tamed dogs can do anything for their masters...hehe....obedience you see...hehe.. and i am NOT against gay marriage...and your juxtaposition of gays with handicapped people does not make sense. gays are not handicapped or mentally retarded or anything like that. they are just normal like straights. to all others, jokes apart (actually that was not hehe)..i would be more than happy if gay marriage is legalised. social approval is a different agenda and in a country like ours, it will take decades if not centuries. but i guess, legalisation should be done first...that will keep the negative mentality for gay marriage under check. this is exactly where i wanted to come. social vs legal. which should come first?. i mean just as i said in case of gay marriage, the social perception will shape up in favor of them with time, but legalisation is necessary at the moment. gay marriage is just an example we are facing today. it's the word "marriage" where the focus should be on. we should focus on its definition, form and manifestation. can it include all form of bondages? so, if in case say fair amount of population practice "direct/indirect sibling marriage" (if that is the right terminology), why not legalise sibling marriage? (social approval may/will follow afterwards). why not legalise marriage with animals? (ditto) why not legalise any form of marriage that is/will be seen in the society? let us redefine the word "marriage"....hehe....let it make more liberal and boundless. let it include anything and evreything :D LooTe

Lootekukur - You are heading off topic again. I am tempted to comment on the point you raise about animals but talking about both in the same breadth will only make a mokcery of gays and derail this conversation. If you are so fascinated by the subject, I'd recomend a separate thread for it and I am sure people willl have interesting ideas to offer. Plus, this knack for abstract discussions that veer off course is precisely why it gets hard to have a meaningul dialogue on Sajha.

How will it adversely impact our future generations? No one is talking here about 'converting' straights into gays, instead, the argument is for those already gay, letting them live a life of dignity and openess. Homosexuality is genetic. Heterosexual people will continue to get married and have kids the way they want. Legalizing gay marriage does not stop a man and a woman from getting married.
