I am so mad, so mad about the mentality about whole nepali population that one should be better in englsih to govern our country. People say that " he even doesn't know how to talk in eng, how he gonna handle ministry, how can he be minister?" That is the sick mentality we all have. Its good and better to know second language but you have to have respect for ur own language first. Couple of days ago I was watching President Hu Jintao's visit in US. when he was having meeting with president Bush at oval office, i saw and heard that Hu was talking in chinese and Bush in eng. Bush said meeting was a good one, though Bush doesn't know chinese lang. Hu didn't talk in english. one more example, last month there was meeting of EU leaders in Europe. Someone from france was invited in the dash to speak, but that guy gives speech in english language, suddenly president of france walks out. why ? cause his national was speaking in English. China is doing better and best business without englsih language, france is one dominant force in todays world. These are couples of examples to prove that one need not to be better in Englsih to make his country developed and powerful. We have seen last time how former house speaker taranath ranabhat speak englsih. He was speaking while making the reports public of royal massacre. He should have talk in Nepali, politicain don't get ashamed if u don't know englsih. Get ashamed when you can't deliver to the people what u have promised. So leaders just work, as u have promise that would be more than enough.

I think people who can speak English have many advantages in today's world because you can connect to more people if you know English language. English is the number one most spoken language in the world. So many great literatures are written in English language. Look at Hong Kong, Singapore, India, their knowledge in English language has played a major on their success. I do not think command in English makes someone more or lesser intelligent however, I believe it certainly have many advantages though.

Methinks, knowing many/any language/s have/has many virtues, and English just seems to have greater significance in terms of being able to communicate in any place - almost. However, a sharp understanding of English is no barometer for person's intelligence. And for politicians, it is more important to "understand" the sentiments of the people, economical aspects/opportunities for the country, and things of that nature which are essential for the nation to progress. All in all, it's better to communicate in the language one feels at ease than to communicate in the language that one is not comfortable with. Thus, the comfort factor and (also) the targeted audience are critical. If one is comfortable and if you "know" your audience, English/French/Japanese/Nepali, or for that matter even "sign language," as the case may be, shall be fine. Astu! IndisGuise:)

Well you must have interpreted. What was said in the thread was if the politician doesnot know proper english he should stick to own language rather then embarassing whole nepali community.Vladimir putin stick to russian when blair visited russia. What about hindi. We have seen nepalese politican taking in very weak hindi in indian channels. Isnt that a slave mentallity?

I dont agree with u thopa....not even in a single point.... Can u compare china to Nepal???? not at this time..... our economy is fu(ked up....our education system is the same ..we rely on english books from a young young stage.. in this perspective do u think if our leaders will go abroad anf talk in Neplese anyone will even bother to translate it??? we arent in spotlight for good deeds like china or anyother people... wee need to be in soptlight for that may be our politicians should learn to communicate in English.

A person with a good english doesnot makes good leader. But why do these politicians have to make our face red with their ludicrous english. Why cant they stick to interpreter. Taranath ranabhat report on royal masacar made farce of very sad situation. Doesn't nepal have a better speaker in english.

Language is a means of communication. Exactly, you do not need to sepak English to show up yourself as a standard person. To get more opportunities and for financial prosperity English has proved as milestone in Nepal. So it's a general idea of people that Who can speak English, definitly he has got something ..... We have a long history since Jaunga Bahadur Visited UK, and surpirsed seeing even KIDS speaking English in UK. Yeah, the mentality has been inherited since years back.It is true that it's still omnipresnt in Nepal. On the top of it, The young kids are taught unnecessary, and overloaded curriculum in Boarding Schools where studetns learn about Nepalese cultures and history in English. ' what a joke' Once a kid who was taught in Ktm boarding school goes to village and asks what the hell is 'BHAISSAI' it's a buffalo ! It is true that there is lack of government of proper supervise of the lanugage used for the prosperity of Language and its Identity. I am worried one day, in decades the kids may not speak Nepali at all. Our Governement is weak, there are never an intelluctuals to implement such issues in the country. As you guys knows just 20 miles away from UK of next coutries of Europe, France, Germany do not speak English where as 5000 miles away every nepali feel proud to utter some English. It is not strange that most of the generations in their between 20's and 30's speak 50% Nepali and 50% English ....... they can not speak Complete Nepali without adding some words in English ... It will not be any wonder, if the national language soon turn into 'Nepangregi' AN
