Tuladhar bags Microsoft award

KOL Report

KATHMANDU, Apr 2 - Alen Bailochan Tuladhar, Executive Officer of Unlimited NuMedia has bagged the Microsoft Corporation?s Most Valuable Professional Award for 2005.
This is the first time ever any Nepali won such an award from the US-based global software giant since it initiated the programme 11 years ago.

The award has been conferred to Tuladhar for his work on localizing the Microsoft Windows, MS Office and Spell Checker into Nepali version, a press release issued here Friday said.

The award recognizes the catalytic role these softwares can play in bridging the digital divide and create physical infrastructure in e-governance, tele-medicine and tele-education, the release said.

Tuladhar, who has been active in the field of using Nepali language in Information Technology for last 15 years has already developed two-typed font for Windows 3.1 version in 1991, Typshala ? the first Nepali typing tutor software, in 1997 and distributed Nepali spell checker software for MS Word (6.0 version) in 1998.

"He developed first Nepali Open Type Font in 2000 starting the use and promotion of local language in IT," the release adds.

With the award, Tuladhar has joined the club of Microsoft accredited people who are recognized for their contribution in actively disseminating knowledge and skills among the Microsoft Users in the online and offline communities. (dds)

This is kinda surprising to me. I know those days when he was unable to pay off his own staff and they started taking away computers and other assets for their salary and he was unable to do anything. Even his buiding was locked out by the bank if I am not wrong. I do not know how he got off all those debts and whether he paid what he owes to his staff. Very surprising indeed.

Highfly, that was a long time ago...his fortunes have changed. 3 yrs ago, when I met him for an interview, he had an IT school going fullswing. Kudos to Alen!

I am glad for him and his family. I have always known him to be a soft spoken gentleman.

Sitara, what happened to his partner in Unlimited, forgot his name but some Sthapit. He was a network specialist. So may be my buddies can collect their salary then.

Ya, he was soft spoken, dangerously soft spoken.

Good news! It should definitely encourge a lot of IT guys out there and induce a huge market in Nepal for software. Hopefully he will be able to attract a lot of projects for friends in Nepal. Kudos to Mr. Allen!

I know it is wrong to comment like this from my side who has been a slave in the US but still ... Allow me, at the expense of Sir Tuladhar, to be jealous of his achievements - there should not be too huge a comfort for this alone. Tremendous efforts are still needed. This technology of allowing Devnagari, or for that matter Bengali, Thai, Urdu, Arabic, has been there for at least 20-30 years. Now the standardization has helped a lot.

I do not know the situation with Mr. Allen, but regarding the flop of his first company, it was a trend at that time in the US too. I've been laid off, lost $30000 in salary in another bankruptcy... whom to blame.

I like Allen.
He's a great guy.

But as an eternal skeptic of reports that do not give a variety of viewpoints, I wondered who wrote the press release that KOL published without further research.

The KOL report says "the award has been conferred to Tuladhar for his work on localizing the Microsoft Windows, MS Office and Spell Checker into Nepali version",
and that "award recognizes the catalytic role these softwares can play in bridging the digital divide and create physical infrastructure in e-governance, tele-medicine and tele-education".

Ah, if only!!

After all that praise-inflation, the reality seems to be quite depressing:
