posted on sebsonline.org- stop remitance to nepal ? 2/5/2005 6:05:25 PM EST guys, i just met a friend of mine who came yesterday from nepal. in nepal, all the land or property purchase and sell has been stopped till next notice. in addition, there is wide spread rumor that king G, if he does not get support of india and usa, uk and european has contemplated to leave the country by amassing wealth till then, thus the foreign reserve is tightly regulated. people in kathmandu has been drawing their savings from bank in threat of their money being seized. government has not allowed drawing more than 4,000NRs per day. So even the money sent to nepal would be in banks locker with army custody, so if you sent US$1,000, it will take a month to draw. imagine people working in gulf, and in other countries who are sending remittence to nepal for their families out of kathmandu, this money will take at least a year to reach them, and there is no guarentee that the money would be given to recipient, if the government needs to use for its military mobilization. so it is better for us to wait for a year or so before we remmit. the basic needs right now for money would be for daily life, like grocery and rents and other things, our family can survive that for additonal year, and we can send them bulk money then. my friend was telling me that the money i did western union transfer a day before the coup to my mom is not released yet, till thursday morning (nepal time) when he had leave to mid-east en route to usa. guys if you have friends or relatives or villagers or neighbours in gulf, pass them the message. the hard earn money with physical labor done in others land, it should be honored and protected. they can save the money for a year and send it back. i am not remitting for a year. sorry to my parents but it is a reality.

I think the corrupt leaders should be put in prison with all their property seized.I am sure, he will do it soon. This will not cause me any harm. Only people who should worry: Corrupt leaders and businessmen. I am sure the king won't go after poor farmers who have a few pieces of lands in the villages.I am from that group,so I support the king.

All those crying here in Sajha are the spilt brats of corrupt politicians, bureaucrats, or businessmen. I am sure others are cool with what is going in Nepal.

Another propaganda by sons / daughters / karyakarta of crooked political Netas? By no means I oppose the freedom of speech here in sajha but this thread has (will) clearly crossed the line by disillusioning the Nepalese living abroad. The reason, the govt has put the ban in withdrawing money temporarily is so that the banks don't run out of money in volatile situation like this. This is an accepted practice in Economics !!!! My thumbs of rule on this: It was good for the US during the depression era; it is good for Nepal now.
