I have been surfing to most of the threads posted daily in sajha, and most of the time most of them use the word Dhotis rather than using Indians.....Dude grow up......we always hated Indians as they are better then us...its all about jealousy.....might also be a hate....depends.....but look at a different aspect....wht would have happen to us if Indians were not in US, No Temples to worship? No Food ingredients that we require? No job opportunities that they have created for us?

How many of the Americans even know abt Nepal....most of them think us from mexico.....when we say we are from Nepal....they say where is that....when we say between India and China....then they know us....

I know it is hard to change ones perpective...but If u give respect u earn respect....most of us are running into consultancy...asking for help....to enter into professional market.....wht if no indians are their....they would have not been as many opportunities that we have to enter......They have earned wht they have.....Most of US business market is totally depended on India...think in tht way......

amit ji ,
i dont know about america coz i am not there , but  u mention about dhotis why most of  nepalis says dhotis  here are the reasons.
u dont think we are  not respecting them  saying dhotis ,we are respecting them also coz our mother and grand mother used to say ye bhayya ji, and the new generation start to say dhotis, coz they preserve there culture and we nepalese pointing them saying good well done from begining u guys are good to prevent ur culture so go a head more. if u think in a positive way u will get this conclusion.
may be in america if some one says indian to them may be there are lots of indians such as (red, black etc etc) . so if some one says dhotis it means a people origannaly fro india not from some another country. its also in positive way .
so what will u do if some one told u  gorkha , do u feel proud of that or feel embarrased?

Let me put it this way if a black guy uses a N word to refer another black guy...its fine...but when a white guy uses the same word to refer a balck guy...he is killed to death......its same for us

If some one from different culture says gurkha, jyapu, bahun to us we get offended as he is not Nepali,....but when a Nepali says its fine...dude even a Nepali can be offended on it when told by another Nepali......

Samashan, how will u feel when a Indian Guy talks to u using word like bahun, jyapu, gurkha...will u be offended or u will feel respected...

The heart of the question is: Is 'dhoti' a racist term? Is it similar to calling someone chink, nigger or paki?
I do not believe it is because most Indians probably don't even know we call them 'dhoti.' Are they getting offended? Hell no.
The truth is the people from Terai who are mislabeled as 'dhotis' get pissed. But it is understandable because calling them a dhoti means calling them an Indian. No wonder a Nepali would get pissed for calling him an Indian.
Bottom line, I do not believe the word itself has a derogatory meaning.

Peace.

We Nepali (specially proper Kathmanduties) are 'Jun Goru ko singh chaina usko naam tikhe'. We can't even produce a needle, we can't even get our shit together. To bring democracy we had to call Chandra Sekhar in 1996 in Nepal, to form a Govt here now we have to have a meeting in Delhi. We eat Pani puri, chaat, watch and understand Hindi movie better than our own language, we keep our hair style as 'Aashaki', We don't have enough money to pay Indian Oil Company but still want oil on credit. Damn......... I can go on and on......... but still hate Indians and call them Madise, and Dhoti, funny thing is as somebody said earlier most of Indian don't even know we called them Dhoti, Madise.

Even here in US, as soon as we leave our backpack at home after the airport, we want somebody to drive to Dhoti gas stations if they are a hiring. Right after graduation we go to a 'Dhoti' consultancy to apply a H1B. Good lord, No matter what still call they 'Dhoti'

I truly agree with Amit..
And,they are here in  the United States, and are opening gas station,Hotels, restaurant, and obviously IT consultancy firm.At least,Nepalese are getting help from them no matter the work. So,we should try to learn something from them.Just imagine they are not our neighborhood  and realize how smart they are..only then you don't say Dhoti to them...We are saying Dhoti because we know their origin, what do they wear, what do they eat and every daily life activities. Forget about these things..We see them negatively even if you are getting help from them..So ,we need to respect them.
I don't think they can open Hotels,Restaurants, gas stations, and IT company/firm if they are not American or at least if they don't have permanent resident..So,just say they are Americans if we talk something about them in United States..

" Yearn,Learn,and Earn" Guys....

Could not agree more with Amit. I just want add few more, my perspective as well.

Indians wherever they are, which parts of the world they are living in, they work hard to make themselves stand out. For ex, they never give up their foods, custumes, cultures and the " very feeling of Indianess", unlike we, the nepalese, we feel ashamed of wearing our traditional custumes, we are ultra modernist ( unltra western) and give hardly any regards and wear as if we are daughter or son of western world..( pls do not get offended)  be we are in nepal or US. We afraid to do different and we are good at pulling legs whereas inidans they always get along well , at least en masse. again ex, back in school days,  indians used to celebrate their festivals be it is holi or diwali, they used to bring so much crowd, thanks to their performance and food, not to mention their unity. But do we nepali bother to do that..no, we do may be in bits and pieces, that too with lid guitar and drum which would hardly entice anyone rather distort our identity and culutre.do we ever make big occasion for " buddha jayanti", how about " mt. everest day on may 29??", how about " teej?" and so on..but we do not do that..we feel ashame again we are ultra modernist.

So people who does not care their culture and identity, how can you expect them to be doing great " as a community". Yeah, as an individual some nepalis are doing good but as a community we are........pls accept it!

kanchu.
there's a reason why Indian stick with their indianness because they were colonized by the British. We really do not care about our identity since it was never made fun of or crushed under someone's feet. Imagine being a servent to a race in your own country, and then when you get your country back, you DO NOT want anything to do with it (Be Indian, buy Indian). So we were never colonized, it's a blessing with a curse. With all that said, it does not mean we cannot learn on our own. But how? Look at our country....everybody is busy with selfishness, wealth, power and corruption. It all starts with schooling to learn to appreciate our identity and culture. Hell, we never realise our existence and out uniquness unitl we land in the US. When we were back home, we cared about our family, be a good son.....that's all about it.
Our love/hate realtionship with Indians is very supeficial. It's NOT raciest as some belive. We do not want to kill them but at the same time we cannot stand those loud mouth, smart ass, cunning Indian. Not saying all of them are like that, but you get the picture. How about "Stop watching Hindi movies" as a first stepping stone to revitilize our Nepali identity.

I totally support NepGuyUS and kanchu.....

I do not believe it is because most Indians probably don't even know we call them 'dhoti.' Are they getting offended? Hell no.

It not whether Indians know about them being called Dhoti, but look at the people in Nepal whose ancestors where from Indian and their generation borned and raised in Nepal, they go to school or college and are called Dhotis, they are offended, I have many friends borned in Nepal, and where called Dhotis, why the hell is that, thats a racist word....We Nepali, in fact cannot ever leave without Indian Support, its same in Nepal, all the major businessmen in  Nepal were from  India, they are mistreated calling Dhoti, personally to me that a racist word, I will get offended when someone comes to me and says "Gurka or Jyapu", just by saying u are from Nepal. Dhotis can be referreed to people of Terai, but dude all the Indians leaving in Nepal and US are not from Terai, are people opening consultantcy out here, gas stations, indian restaraunt, stores, professional from Terai, no not at all they are all over India, they cannot be referred as Dhoti,

They are smarter than us to survive in the world and will always remain, we just follow their path, I have never heard any Nepali doing gr8 in the world that even any one recognizes, Most of the billionaires in the world are from India, India the biggest IT market in the whole world right now, US, UK, Europe Companies depends on India, is their any multimillion company depending on Nepal, not at all,

We nepali sometimes gets offended when someone thinks that we are Indian, when someone says us are you from Mexico we are happy, why is that, everyone hates other country someway or another, but I can just say we students in US are totally depending on Indians so that we can pay our expenses and college fees. Otherwise We are screwed up as we Nepali are good for nothing. We just know how to pull each other legs, when the whole world is moving on developing their country.......I cannot even think about it.....to bring development in the country first we must broaden our mind....and grow up

Amit,

If your sole argument for respecting indians are because of the consultancy then you need a whole mind makeover. What made you think that the "consultancy" earned them their respect. How in the hell are you arguing that they are creating more job for us?

As far as i know, it has taken oppurtunities from us. What do you think these H1B caps are directly related to. Have you tried looking at the list of companies who got h1b visas - almost 75% of the caps are fulfilled by indian consultancies. That means, no matter what we do we fall into the trap of indian consultancy.

Okay let me tell you short story abt Ms. H and Ms. C.

Ms. H worked her ass off in college - got good GPA, worked hard on her job search, got the job, convinced the company what h1b and all were, applied for h1b, got into lottery - ONLY TO BE NOT LUCKY.

Ms. C also went to college- she kinda worked hard, she graduated, got her OPT, didn't find important to apply for real job, worked here and there. Here OPT was about to expire, then she realized she might have to go back to her own country. Jobs were not easy to find - what did she do "enrolled" into indian consultancy which taught her to lie that she has experience of this many years and blah blah blah. She filed for h1b, got lucky - got her h1b.

It's not fair. Let me make myself clear - It was not Ms. C fault that Ms. H did not get her h1b. I am not even trying to blame Ms C for Ms H not getting her h1b. I have a lot of friend who got h1b from consultancies.

However, i respect Indians for what they have done and how they progressed in every part of the world. Just wanted to disagree with Amits fact that consultancies are creating oppurtunities for us.
