it is if you are applying for green card or citizenship. It will make the process harder, most of the times rejection.

If you are without work , you need to feed yourself and your children, that is the reason the unemployment benifit is provided. If you fall in this catagory do not hesitate to use it.

I don't think it falls on the catagory of the welfare

It is just like the insurance, more u pay it ,more u get .Ifu don't work and and don't earn certain amount,U won't get it .

But don't know it will affect on the status like GC ,citizenship.

Yes, it will effect your GC/citizenship application if someday you plan to file. DO NOT FILE  UNEMPLOYMENT OR SECTION 8 OR FOOD STAMP, Period!

God bless,
NepTex

Collect your unemployment, if you need it. I am out of work and just started collecting it. I am waiting  for my interview for Citizenship though, I already got my letter saying that they will call me within certain days. I paid taxes and I don't hesistate to collect it.

I can tell you from my personal experience. I had collected unemployment benefits while I was a permanent resident. And it did not affect me at all when I applied for citizenship. I got my citizenship within 2.5months of applying for it. It is something you have paid for legally so I do not see why it should affect you when you need/deserve it. You pay your dues and when it is time to reap the benefits, you do it. But am not sure what your status is at the moment so your case might vary from that of mine. But good luck with it.

The question is are do you have a green card. if u do you are eligible if u don't you are not.

if you are in any type of visa you can't and you shpould not. It is simple is that.

UI- I  think is an IRS issue not INS.  They might ask you about your job etc etc but as long as you are a law abiding person with all the eligibiligy for a Citizenship, I dont think UI will stop you.  Besides where does Neptex/Nepali dai get his facts from?  Can you guys enlighten us and quote them please?  On matter like citizenship please also consult your lawyer you dont have to believe what is said here.

Thanks for all the inputs...

Upto now I am convinced that is okay to collect unemployment insurance as someone above said that it is a insurance that employers paid for. I was confused with food stamps etc kind of things..

But, could someone say more on implications on Citizenship thing?  Any reliable source, internet link, posting etc (I know somebody above already said that it did not affected their citizenship process.)

I think one should be a green card holder for unemployment benefits.  For  food stamp, medicaid and housing you must have a green card or be a citizen.
