Nepali Documentary Film Screening
Followed by a discussion with the Director, Mr. Dil Bhusan Pathak
Organized by PeopleKoBot
(A chhalphal discussion forum focused on Nepal)
When? Saturday, June 2nd, 2007, 5:30 PM
Where? KV Open Center, 5th Floor, 19 West 26th Street, New York, NY 10001
(Between Broadway and 6th Avenue, across from a church. Nearest subway: “F†train to 23rd Street Station)
This event is FREE for the public, but donations for the Director will be appreciated. The format will consist of showing the two documentaries, followed by a moderated discussion with the Director.
Synopsis:
"Newsroom Bahira "
Outside the News Room (30 Min), (with English sub-titles) - contains some graphic descriptions
A television anchor, gripped by the story of a woman's encounter with abortion in rural Nepal, pursues the story off-screen by traveling to the village of Accham in search of the story and the woman, Sushila. Sushila's death is not ordinary, and yet horifically common in Nepal, as well as many parts of the developing world. Abortion performed under traditional methods proves fatal for women in most cases. The method, a mix of superstition and unsafe medical practice often causes irreparable damage and death, and provides a wider commentary on the pervasive gender inequality in Nepal. This film provides a gripping and honest portrayal of a practice that desperately needs to be eradicated.
"Sukh Bahadur Adhikari, Class IV"
Quest of a 79-year-old man for education (28 Min) (with English sub-titles)
After a life spent working as a driver in the British India Government, Sukh Bahadur Adhikari has returned home to his village in rural Nepal. At the age when most are content with retirement, Sukh Bahadur sets on the path to fulfill his dreams of pursuing a school education at the age of 79. He attends the local school sitting next to his granddaughter in class 4, and they sit alongside at home completing their assignments. Though lacking formal education, Sukh Bahadur is a man of wisdom and his insights into the nuances of life, religion, culture and development are thrilling to watch. This film provides a heart touching glimpse into the life of a man and his quest for education.

Saw the dead rhino and had nothing but pity for the wretched beast. Why are the hooves cut off? Damn, I thought only the horn (in reality; strong matted hair) was precious. Isn't there a way where the horn could be clipped off without needing to kill this animal? if so, the govt or one of those thousands of NGOs should do that and have horn-less rhinos roam about Chitwan. It may not look as good, but atleast will save the poor animals from getting extinct.

Thanks, Samsara, for bringing along few of your friends to the event. I hope you and your friends enjoyed it. Persnonally, I thought the turnout was pretty decent, and the Q & A session was lively. It was especially impressive to see a young kid (8-9 years old?) ask, "Why did he (Sukbahadur) not go to school when he was my age?" Such a young kid daring to ask a question in the midst of mostly adult audience was impressive; and he also exemplified the fact that young Nepali kids who are either born or grew up here need more exposure to tough realities back home. Thanks also to everyone else who showed interest in the event. Here are a couple of pictures from the event:

Thanks to you instead for the invite...I'd invited more people but they couldn't show up due to prior commitments and the NYNYC guys had soccer practice the same day. Anyway, I guess the ones who couldn't attend missed out on socio-economic-educational issues of importance. Good job there!
