राजसंस्थाको औचित्य

प्रधानमन्त्री गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइरालाले आगामी निर्वाचनपछि गठन हुने संविधानसभाको पहिलो बैठकले राजतन्त्रको विपक्षमा फैसला दिनसक्ने भएकाले राजा र युवराजलाई गद्दी त्याग गर्ने आग्रह गरेका छन् । राजतन्त्रलाई आलंकारिक रूपमा राख्न चाहने नेताका तर्फाट सोमबार विराटनगरमा भएको यो ऐतिहासिक अभिव्यक्तिले नेपाली कांग्रेसमात्र होइन, आठ दल गठबन्धन गणतन्त्रतर्फअग्रसर भएको किटान गरेको छ । यसले मुलुकलाई गणतन्त्रात्मक बनाउन मनोवैज्ञानिक प्रभावसमेत पार्नेछ । राष्ट्राध्यक्षको जिम्मेवारीसमेत भएका शक्तिशाली गठबन्धन प्रधानमन्त्रीको धारणाले देशलाई एउटा प्रमुख विवादको विषयमा गरेको यो प्रस्ट दिशानिर्देश हो ।
नेपालमा राजसंस्थाको औचित्य र सान्दर्भिकताको सबभन्दा प्रभावशाली पक्षधरका रूपमा प्रमुख सत्तारूढ दल नेपाली कांग्रेस जन्मकालदेखि रह“दै आएको हो । कांग्रेस सभापतिसमेत रहेका प्रधानमन्त्री कोइरालाले यसअघि राजसंस्थालाई आलंकारिक रूपमा राख्ने र ँसबैलाई ठाउ“ दिने’ धारणा राखे पनि उनको दल कांग्रेसको पछिल्लो राष्ट्रिय महाधिवेशन भने औपचारिक रूपमा राजतन्त्रबारे मौन बसिसकेको थियो । त्यस हिसाबले कोइरालाको पछिल्लो अभिव्यक्ति नितान्त नया“ नभए पनि यसले मुलुकमा रहेको अन्योल चिर्ने प्रयत्न गरेको छ । राजसंस्थालाई कुनै पनि ठाउ“ दिने मनस्थितिमा प्रमुख राजनीतिक शक्तिहरू नरहने यसको प्रमुख लक्ष्य देखिएको छ ।

नेपालमा राजसंस्था औपचारिक रूपमा असान्दर्भिक भएको औपचारिक र विधिवत् घोषणा गत कात्तिक २२ गते सम्पन्न सात दल गठबन्धनको नेपाल सरकार र नेकपा -माओवादी) बीच भएको बृहत् शान्ति सम्झौताले गरेको थियो । शासन अधिकारमा राजसंस्थाको कुनै भूमिका नरहने त्यसमा स्पष्ट उल्लेख गरेअनुसार नेपालको अन्तरिम संविधान, २०६३ जारी भइसकेको समेत छ । राजसंस्था आधिकारिक रूपमा कही“ पनि औचित्य र सान्दर्भिक नरहेको किटान भइसके पनि शोभनीय निकासका लागि गठबन्धन दलहरूले संविधानसभा निर्वाचनमार्फ जनादेश प्रतीक्षा गर्ने निर्ण्र्ाागरेका हुन् । आगामी संविधानसभा पहिलो बैठकको साधारण बहुमतले राजसंस्थाबारे निर्ण्र्ाागर्ने अन्तरिम संविधानको लक्ष्य तय गरिए पनि प्रमुख दलहरू त्यसको टुंगोमा अहिल्यै पुग्नु मुलुकलाई अन्योलमा नराख्नु हो ।

राजतन्त्रलाई नेपालले राज्यप्रणालीको शैलीका रूपमा अख्तियार गर्दै आएको मात्र होइन, ०४७ सालको प्रजातान्त्रिक संविधानले पनि राजालाई राष्ट्राध्यक्षका रूपमा सम्मानित तुल्याएको थियो । इतिहासको अनुभवबाट शिक्षा लिई राजनीतिक दलहरूले अन्तरिम संविधान निर्माण गर्दा नेपाललाई गणतन्त्रोन्मुख तुल्याइसकेका छन् । राजसंस्थालाई भूमिकाविहीन तुल्याउनासाथ राजदरबार परिवारलाई राज्यले औपचारिक रूपमा बेहोर्नुपर्ने कुनै पनि औचित्य सावित हुन नसक्ने प्रश्न उठिसकेको पनि छ । कुनै हैसियत वा जिम्मेवारीबेगर कुनै संस्था राख्नुको उपादेयता सावित गर्न सकि“दैन । बृहत् शान्ति सम्झौतालाई राजा आफैंले जनआन्दोलन ०६२/६३ को बलमा पुनःस्थापित गरेको प्रतिनिधिसभाले र्सवसम्मतिले पारित गरिसकेको मात्र होइन, राजा ज्ञानेन्द्र आफैंले त्यसको र्समर्थनमा वक्तव्यसमेत जारी गरेका छन् । त्यस हिसाबले राजसंस्था आफैंले आफ्नो भूमिकाविहीनता स्वीकार गरिसकेको छ । जसअनुसार उसले आफ्नो सान्दर्भिकता समाप्त भएको घोषणामा हस्ताक्षर गरिसकेको छ ।

प्रधानमन्त्री कोइरालाले आफ्नो अभिव्यक्तिमा राजा र युवराजलाई गद्दी त्याग गर्न आग्रह गर्नुको कारण गत फागुन ७ मा दिइएको राजाको वक्तव्य र राजदरबारले यसबीच मुलुकमा अस्थिरता फैलाउन सहयोग पुर्‍याएको सर्न्दर्भ दिएका छन् । रायमाझी आयोग प्रतिवेदनदेखि प्रजातन्त्र दिवसको वक्तव्यसमेतका लागि राजामाथि कारबाही गर्न आठ दल गठबन्धन र अन्तरिम व्यवस्थापिका-संसद्ले प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई निर्देशन दिएको पृष्ठभूमिमा पनि प्रधानमन्त्रीले सम्मानपर्ूवक गद्दी त्याग गराउने मनसाय प्रकट गरेको देखिन्छ । प्रधानमन्त्रीको अभिव्यक्ति व्याख्या गर्नेहरूले राजसंस्था राख्ने तर राजा र युवराजलाई पन्छाउने चाहना र्सार्वजनिक गरिएको भन्ने अर्थ्याएका पनि छन् । बुझ्नुपर्ने के छ भने मुलुकमा गणतन्त्रका पक्षमा व्यापक जनलहर हुनुका साथै राजसंस्थाबेगर लोकतन्त्रको स्थायित्व र मुलुकको प्रगति सुनिश्चित गर्न सकिन्छ भन्ने बृहत् जनचाहना देखिएको छ ।

मुलुकमा राजसंस्थाको सान्दर्भिकता नरहेको प्रस्ट किटानसहितको शान्ति सम्झौतालाई स्वीकार गरेका राजाले स्वेच्छाले सम्मानजनक निकास दिन सक्ने वातावरण बनेको छ । त्यसैगरी राजा र युवराजबाट गद्दी त्यागको आग्रह गरिसकेको हुनाले प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई त्यसअनुसार कारबाही गराउने दायित्व पनि थपिएको छ । राजालाई कारबाहीको सट्टा समुचित स्वेच्छिक निकासका लागि आग्रह गर्ने विकल्प प्रधानमन्त्रीले रोजेका छन् । प्रधानमन्त्रीको सदाशयपर्ूण्ा आग्रह राजपरिवारले अस्वीकार गर्न सक्ने अवस्था छैन । त्यसो नगर्दा प्रधानमन्त्रीले देशमा अनेक दबाब सामना गर्नुपर्नेछ । प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई अवाञ्छित दबाबमुक्त राख्न राजपरिवारले स्वेच्छाले आफ्नातर्फाट अपेक्षित योगदान गर्न सक्छ ।

In fact, Nepal's monarchy has always been exploited by bhardars and mantris. The parties have some valid arguments against the king, but monarchy has suffered much more--- it has been a victim of bhardars. Don't forget that almost half of 238 years they were enslaved by Rana PMS. Now the SPA about to begin another century

I agree with Capt. Haddock.

Following his thought process: should Gyanendra abdicate and remove Paras from line to the throne, thereby crowning Hridayendra as infant king, will that placate the citizens who are demanding republican setup in growing numbers? I would say no.

While an infant is an infant with no follies whatsoever, that infant will surely grow up to be an adult. Now who is to say that Hridayendra will not be a murderer like his father, unlikeable like his grandfather and oppressor like his great grandfather?

For the argument's sake, let's say Hridayendra turns out to be a fine gentleman with all the gentlemanly qualities, but would that guarantee that he will also be a fine officer? After all, king would be a head of state, hence, requiring all the fine officer-ly qualities.

And suppose Hridayendra does turn out to be another spoiled, despotic, cruel, and moronic SOB - just like his father and forefathers - should Nepal go through another jana-andolan or even worse another people's war?

So the logic dictates that Nepal's monarchy should be abolished. Why keep the parasitic, good-for-nothing, tyranical at its worst, ignoramus at its best, treasury wasting institution alive when we now have the ability and will to form our goverment of the people, by the people, for the people? To borrow a phrase from the US constitution, it is time for the following:

We the People of Nepal, in Order to form a more perfect Nation, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for Nepal.

Riten - Ideologically I am exactly where you seem to be - I am all for a republic.

However, as you can attest to I am sure, politics is the art of the impossible and I think the abdication card is still on the table and not yet played by the King. He is known to compromise only when against the wall, and I wonder if that's what PM Koirala and others are trying to push him towards.

Just a thought.

Be it Gyanendra, Hridayendra, or, for that matter, Paramendra, the world does not need monarchs. Kings are of the past, and if we believe in the present and a brighter future, every country in the world should be governed by the PEOPLE.

1. Economics. Wealth and resources, of which Nepal has dire scarcity, should not be utilized to finance the lives of any individual and/or family.

2. Personality. Gyanendra? Paras? You kidding me?

3. Morality. No person and/or family should be accorded any higher respect than any other citizen by the virtue of their birth, jaat, gottra, kul, or what have you which does little to glorify their INDIVIDUAL deeds.

4. Practicality. The root of abject poverty, deprivation, and that of many other social ills is feudalism. Societies that stand on feudal structures are the ones that are poor, war-ravaged, severely underdeveloped, etc. Monarchy, by the virtue of it's definition and reason d'etre, promotes and consolidates feudalism. The hell with it in the modern world. We can't be living in the 16th century.

Period.

लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रकालागि अिहंसात्मक एवं शान्तिपूर्ण अभियायन नरोकिने

काठमाडौं, मार्च १२


त्यसदिन अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय नारी दिवस थियो । देशभरी महिला अधिकारको लागि विभिन्न कार्यक्रमहरु भइरहेका थिए । सोही दिन लोकतन्त्र र शान्तिकालागि नागरिक आन्दोलनका अगुवा डा। देवेन्द्रराज पाण्डेको घरमा कसैले बस राखेको समाचार मध्यान्हमा मैले सुने । डा। पाण्डे एउटा कार्यक्रममा भाग लिने सिलसिलामा लण्डन जानुभएको थियो । उहाँको घरमा प्रेसर कुकर बम राखिएको थियो तर त्यो बिस्फोट हुन भने पाएन छ । त्यसैदिन साँझ दोस्रो पटक डा। पाण्डेको घर पुगेर करीब पौने ६ बजेतिर म आफ्नो बासस्थान गौशाला फर्किए । यो मेरो दीदी भिनाजुको घर हो जहाँ १५ वर्षदेखि म बस्दै आइरहेको छु
रातको करीब ८ बजेर २५ मिनेट जाँदा टेलिफोन आयो । सशस्त्र प्रहरीको इन्सपेक्टरको रुपमा परिचय दिदै नम्र स्वरमा फोन गर्नेले मेरो वासस्थानमा बम भेटिएको हो भनेर प्रश्न सोध्नु भयो । मलाई लाग्यो यो अफवाह हुनुपर्छ । तसर्थ मैले बिहान डा। पाण्डेको घरमा पो बम भेटिएको हो यहाँ त्यस्तो केही छैन भन्ने जवाफ दिए । तर उहाँले सशस्त्र प्रहरीको उच्चसूत्रसम्म यस्तो खबर आइपुगेको भनेपछि मैले तल हेर्छु भने । उहाँले ५ मिनेटपछि फेरी फोन गर्ने बताउनु भयो । त्यसपछि लगातार टेलिफोनको घण्टी बज्न थाले । नजिकको गौशाला प्रहरी चौकीबाट पनि फोन आयो र इन्सपेक्टरले आपुू त्यही आइरहेको जानकारी दिनुभयो ।
गौशाला प्रहरी कार्यालयबाट आएका प्रहरीहरुको टोलीले खोजबिन गर्दा मूलढोकामा पोलिथिनभित्र कागजले बेरेर राखेको एउटा पोको फेला पर् यो । त्यो गहु्रङ्गो थियो । प्रहरीहरुले नै मोटो लीमा पोलिथिन प्याकेट झुण्डाएर करीब २०० मिटर टाढा रहेको गौशाला प्रहरी चौकी पुर् याए । करीब १ घण्टापछि ठूलो आवाज सहित केही पडकिएको सुनियो । सशस्त्र प्रहरीबाट आएको बम निरोधक दस्ताले त्यसलाई निस्तेज पारेको रहेछ । प्रहरी सूत्रले दिएको आधिकारिक जानकारी अनुसार त्यो सुतली बम थियो ।
बम र बन्दुकको त्रास देखाएर कसैले हामीलाई तसा्रउन खोजे । यो घटनामा कस्को हात होला भनि पत्रकारहरुद्वारा सोधिएको प्रश्नमा मेरो पहिलो प्रतिकृया थियो ूहाम्रा गतिविधिबाट जो आकुल छन् यो तिनैको काम हुनुपर्छ ।ू तर कुनै पनि अवस्थामा लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रकालागि हाम्रो अिहंसात्मक एवं शान्तिपूर्ण अभियायन नरोकिने कुरा पनि र्मैले प्रष्ट पारेको थिए । हाम्रा गतिविधिबाट सबैभन्दा आकुल को भएको हुनुपर्छ मेरो मानस पटलमा विगतका दृश्यहरु सलबलाउन थाले । वर्तमान सरकारले जन आन्दोलनका दोषीहरुमाथि विभागीय कारवाही गर्न निर्देशन दिएको तर मूलदोषी तत्कालीन मन्त्रिपरिषद्का अध्यक्ष राजा ज्ञानेन्द्रलाई भने कुनै कारवाही नगर्ने निर्णय गरेपछि राजा ज्ञानेन्द्रलाई नै मानवता विरुद्धको अपराधमा तत्काल कारवाही गर्नुपर्छ र दण्डहीनतालाई अन्त्य गर्नुपर्छ भनेर फागुन २३ गते अर्थात् ७ मार्चका दिन लोकतन्त्र र शान्तिकालागि नागरिक आन्दोलनकातर्पुबाट हामीले प्रधानमन्त्री निवास बालुवाटार अगाडि धर्ना दिएका थियौं ।
यसभन्दा अगाडि एमनेष्टी इन्टरनेशनल नेपाल पत्रकार महासंघ मानव अधिकार तथा शान्ति समाज इन्सेक लगायत ९ वटा संस्था मिलेर दण्डहीनताको अन्त्यकालागि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय फौजदारी अदालतको विधानलाई अनुमोदन गर्न नेपाल सरकारलाई आग्रह सहित प्रदर्शन गरेर सभामुखमार्पुत ज्ञापन पत्र दिइएको थियो । फागुन ७ गते राजा ज्ञानेन्द्रले २०६१ माघ १९ को शाही कदम जनताको चाहना अनुरुप थियो भनेर नेपाली जनताको गौरवमय जन आन्दोलन ०६२÷६३ माथि हिलो छयाप्न खोजेपछि फागुन ८ गते नै प्रधानमन्त्री कार्यालय िसंहदरबार अगाडि लोकतन्त्र र शान्तिकालागि नागरिक आन्दोलनले धर्ना बसेर राजा ज्ञानेन्द्र र राजतन्त्रलाई नै कारवाही गर्न दवाब दिएको थियो ।
फागुन १८ गते नागरिक आन्दोलनकै आयोजनामा काठमाडौंमा गणतन्त्र साँस्कृतिक साँझ आयोजना भएको थियो । जसमा १५० भन्दा ज्यादा कलाकार गोलबद्ध भएर गणतन्त्रको पक्षमा सिर्जना प्रस्तुत गरेका थिए । २०६३ पौष माघ र फागुन महिनामा मानव अधिकार तथा शान्ति समाजको आयोजनामा देशका २४ स्थानमा लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रको स्थापनार्थ गोलबद्ध हुन सबैलाई आह्वान गर्दै २ दर्जन नागरिक सभाहरु सम्पन्न भएका थिए । ती सभाहरुमा देखिएको उत्साहले आकुल भएको एउटा वर्ग हामीमाथि नियोजित षडयन्त्र गरेर त्यस्ता कार्यक्रम विथोल्ने प्रयासमा रहेको आशंका भने हामीलाई थियो । लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रको पक्षमा उर्लेको त्यो आवेगले संविधान सभाको निर्वाचनलाई उत्सवको रुपमा लैजान सन्देश दिएको थियो । सात प्रमुख राजनीतिक दल र माओवादीसहित ८ वटै दलका प्रतिनिधिहरुलाई हरेक माचमा एकै ठाउँमा भेला गराएर सहकार्यकालागि प्रेरित गर्न र आपसी समझदारी र विश्वास बढाउन तथा एकअर्काका कमजोरी अन्त्य गर्न हामीले ती नागरिक सभामार्पुत प्रयास गरेका थियौं । राजनीतिक शक्तिलाई नै बलियो बनाउने हाम्रो अभिप्राय थियो । राजनीतिक शक्ति बलियो हुँदा अराजकता स्वतः समाप्त हुन्छ भन्ने हाम्रो मान्यता थियो । हामीले खोजेको प्रणाली भनेको प्रतिस्पर्धात्मक लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र थियो । अर्थात् आधारभूत स्वतन्त्रता मानव अधिकार र सामाजिक न्यायको प्रत्याभूति सहितको लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र । कुनैपनि राजनीतिक दलभन्दा ज्यादा सभाहरु आयोजना गर्नै क्रममा हामी अग्रपंक्तिमा थियौं । २३८ वर्षदेखि छटपटाइरहेको समाजमा अिहंसात्मक आन्दोलनको माध्यमबाटै निकास खोजिनुपर्छ भन्ने कुरामा हामी स्पष्ट थियौं । अिहंसा हाम्रो प्रमुख दर्शन थियो । ती नागरिक सभाहरुमार्पुत हामीले पाएको समर्थन जनताको स्नेहले हामीलाई भावविभोर बनाएको थियो । आम जनतामा उर्लेको त्यो लहर देखेर प्रायः सबै दलका मन्तव्य व्यक्त गर्ने प्रतिनिधिहरुले लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र भन्न बाध्य भएका थिए ।
विगतलाई फर्केर हेर्दा मृत्युसँग साक्षात्कार भएका थुप्रै घटनाहरु मेरो मानस पटलमा सलबलाउन थाले । यस्ता थुप्रै मोड नाघिसकेको हुँदा म मा मृत्युको कुनै त्रास छैन । म र म जस्ता २÷४ जना नरहे पनि एउटा यस्तो जमात तयार भइसकेको छ जसले लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रको आन्दोलनलाई हाँक्छन् । नव नेपाल निर्माणको संकल्प बोकेर अघि बढने नयाँ पुस्ताको जोश र जाँगरले नै सफलताको िसंढी तयार गरिरहेको छ ।

Great ideological arguments there - couldn't agree more with most, if not all, of what has been said so far (especially the opinions of Riten and Poonte)

It will be interesting to see how the politics of all this plays out. When the annals of history are written, I suspect this period will be a minefield of information for students of political science.

The king becomes the pawn as haggling begins for a new government

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has no love lost for King Gyanendra, but in the past year he has refused to be swept along by the republican wave.

He is now producing his trump card in exchange for concessions from the Maoists on minimum conditions before they join the government: return of confiscated property, stopping all extortion, a formal renunciation of violence, and general good behaviour.

His Biratnagar statement on 12 March (“in a sense we are already a republic”) was to keep his end of the bargain with Chairman Dahal. But more importantly, it was a last ditch attempt to save Nepal’s monarchy from extinction. It may not do the trick, but Koirala figures it's worth a try and will also make him look less like a royalist.

By skipping two generations and going directly to Paras’ four-year-old son Hridayendra, Koirala is keeping the option of retaining the monarchy and its still-loyal army brass as an insurance against future instability or dominance of militarised communists.

The three main international players in Nepal, who are concerned about potential post-Koirala power grabs, are also said to be in favour of this option. Emissaries took the message to Gyanendra recently, and the king is said to have wanted to know if that was his only option.

What seems to have riled Koirala most are hints of Hindu royalists stoking the tarai fires, as well as the king’s own controversial Democracy Day statement in which he tried to justify his takeover in 2005. Although Gyanendra read out that speech on the phone to Koirala beforehand, the wily prime minister could have given the green light on its delivery knowing full well that it would stir a hornet’s nest. As the prime minister and the king try to out-maneouvre each other, the danger is both could be out-maneouvered by the republicans.

“He [Gyanendra] still doesn’t get it,” said one longtime royal watcher, “to me it looks like he won’t agree to abdication. He’d rather take the monarchy and the country down with him.”

If it’s hard to see how both the king and his son could be convinced about the Naba Yubaraj option, they’d be even less likely to agree to revert the monarchy to King Birendra’s surviving grand-daughter. With abolitionists now literally at the gates, there are questions about whether it is worth going through so much trouble to save the monarchy.

The more urgent business is to set up the interim government which includes the Maoists, and declare a date for elections. In this, the king has become the pawn.

However, even within the NC there is discomfort that Dahal and Koirala are deciding on their own on a matter that should be left to the people. "This is simple dictatorship," said one kangresi leader.

Until now, Koirala has been playing a delicate balancing act by keeping both the Maoists and the army generals engaged. His conundrum: throwing out the monarchy would mean die-hard royals would have nothing left to lose, but keeping a ceremonial monarchy would be the excuse the Maoists need to play
hard ball.

Hence the halfway Hridayendra option.

e it Gyanendra, Hridayendra, or, for that matter, Paramendra, the world does not need monarchs. Kings are of the past, and if we believe in the present and a brighter future, every country in the world should be governed by the PEOPLE.

POONTE NEPAL AS A COUNTRY HAS ALWAYS BELONGED TO NEPALI PEOPLE. NOT THE KING. I DID NOT FEEL LIKE THE COUNTRY BELONGED TO THE KING WHEN I WAS GROWING UP WHEN BIRENDRA WAS THE KING. I ALWAYS FELT NEPAL BELONGED TO ME TOO.

1. Economics. Wealth and resources, of which Nepal has dire scarcity, should not be utilized to finance the lives of any individual and/or family.

ECONOMICS, WEALTH, AND RESOURCES ARE SCARCE IN NEPAL ? OH WE DON'T KNOW THAT. IS THE WEALTH IN NEPALI SOCIETY DIVIDED EVENLY NOW OR WAS IT MORE EVEN 10-20 YRS AGO ? IN OTHER WORDS IS OUR ECONOMY BETTER NOW OR WAS IT BETTER 10-20 YRS AGO(look at price of goods and commodity, add inflation, value against the dollar) ?

2. Personality. Gyanendra? Paras? You kidding me?

AND WHAT THE LIKES OF PRACHANEY AND GIRIZA ARE BETTER(mind you i am no fan of gyaney or his son) ? he he you must be kiddin. ha ha ha

3. Morality. No person and/or family should be accorded any higher respect than any other citizen by the virtue of their birth, jaat, gottra, kul, or what have you which does little to glorify their INDIVIDUAL deeds.

Trust me i am not in the upper half of the jaat bhaat, or gotra, or kul. But I never felt left out in the society while growing up in Nepal. Got my education and got my job and the oppertunity to come here(on my own). So when ppl come up with all these excuses ....he he IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY(am a living proof of that).

4. Practicality. The root of abject poverty, deprivation, and that of many other social ills is feudalism. Societies that stand on feudal structures are the ones that are poor, war-ravaged, severely underdeveloped, etc. Monarchy, by the virtue of it's definition and reason d'etre, promotes and consolidates feudalism. The hell with it in the modern world. We can't be living in the 16th century.

You can tell that to people who want nepal to remain hindu kingdom. they are ready for their ragat ko bali to keep nepal a hindu nation. its easy to make such statement but vewy vewy haad to follow through.

With the aid of so called Republic movers and shakers Maos took power in Nepal. But I do not see any Republic MOvement don't have the cajoles to stand up to the MAOS. IN OTHER WORDS THEY ARE A BUNCH OF PUSSIES. THANKS TO THESE PUSSIES NEPAL IS IN A DEEP HOLE NOW. TELL ME IF I AM WRONG. King Of Nepal To Lose More Than 500 Members Of His Staff

Kathmandu, Nepal (BANG) - The King of Nepal is to lose three-quarters of his staff.

Nepal's government is to remove 580 of King Gyanendra's 774 aides, including cooks, waiters and Queen Komal's hairdressers and servants who collect flowers for use in the royals' religious ceremonies.

The king has few allies in the new coalition government, which formed when the monarch was forced to abandon direct rule last year following a series of pro-democracy street protests.

Ministers want to reassign half of the staff who currently work at the Narayanhiti palace to ordinary government posts.

Another quarter will be offered voluntary redundancy and, in addition, all employees over 58 will be compulsory retired.

This week, the prime minister, Girija Prasad Koirala, asked the king to abdicate, saying the monarch had lost his reputation.

Since the king relinquished power he has been asked to pay taxes and his image has been removed from banknotes.

The government also plans to nationalize property accumulated by King Gyanendra since he ascended the throne in 2001.

No matter whether I disagree with you (which is sometimes) or agree with you (which is quite a bit of the times), it is always a pleasure to read what you have to say. I say that in all earnest. There is one thing you do better than any one else I have come across on Sajha: expose what you see as hypocrisy. You have done it of the Maoists, of the Royalist and of SPA-ists. And as for your style, man, it is classic.

That said, allow me to chime in on a few things:

(1) The economy has declined in some areas no doubt but the King is not positioned any better to steward it in my opinion. Unless we can fix the political anomalies in Nepal, the economy will continue to chug along at a slow rate. Political stability is the key to economic prosperity and the political landscape has been so lopsided in Nepal that the artificial peace that some people saw during the Kings rule was bound to give way sooner or later. I think it is a miracle the economy is still doing decently thanks to remittances. The poverty rate has increased since the 70s and 80s but seems to be holding steady in recent years.

Also be mindful the country has experienced a population explosion in the same period.Something that is most likely to have contributed to Jan Andolans I and II. Our population pyramid is heavy towards the bottom. Something like 60% of our population is under 30 ( dont have the exact number but it is in that range). Such societies are prone to revolution. Examples, Iran, Afghanistan, Romania and as historians are now beginning to uncover many other country during their revolutions. Who knows if we had stayed a democracy since 1960, we might as a society developed the tools to better harness the energy and anger of young people instead of wasting time fighting for our rights.

Therefore I find the argument that the King was a better steward a bit feeble. The King was as inept as the parties have been in stewarding the economy.

(2) Prachanda and Girija may or may not be better than King Gyanendra or Price Paras, but lest anyone forget, there is a process for removing them. If you dont like Girija, then dont vote for him or his party in the elections. But what is the option if you dont like Gyanendra or Paras? Suck it up? Girija may personally not be better than Gyanendra but the political system that he seeks is better equipped to handle Nepal's problems than the one Gyanendra sought.


(3) As for a plan, I think we discussed this once before, right around the time when we first exchanged ideas, that there is a road map layed down by the SPA that whether you accept it or not, believe it or not, is moving along. An interim government seems inevitable and CA elections have a good chance of happening either at the expected time or shortly thereafter. Whether it takes a few months (most likely) or a year, every body in Nepal, from Maoists to Monarchists (the moderate ones at least), seem to think this is the way forward.

(4) On the question of republicans in the SPA serving as enablers of Maoism, that can be argued both ways. Without such voices, the King would prolly not have bowed down. I am not a Maoist, but for god's sake, the country has just seen the end of a civil war and I dont see any other way forward but to include the Maoists. Yes, unregistered arms are still an issue, but that is exactly what the government and parties are focussed on right now. Also, Prachanda has for all intents and purposes, although he has not said this in so many words, realized Maoism in its classical sense is a pipe dream. Maoists need to be kept in check and I laud Ambassador Moriarty and PM Koirala on this account, but without the comrades in the political process there cannot be a meaningful or lasting solution to the current problems.

In light of this, I think Ganatantra is inevitable, whether we like it or not. It is a word we need to start getting used to because that's where Nepal is headed. Short of the Hrideyandra card (some would argue in spite of) it is inevitable.

My 2 cents ... have a good one.
