Few of the posts in sajha I came across contain words that are rarely used. I don't understand if this is necessary. Communication is a process where the reciever of the message should be able to understand the message completely. Easy to understand message is more important than the degree of sophistication. If you do use these kinds of words and it is your style then it should be ok.. I mean to say that the words flow easily as you type or speak. Some people forcefully insert vocabulary i.e. type document in MS Word and 'Right Click' the word and then choose 'Synonyms'. Using the internet for thesarus is also another option. I do appreciate creative styles of writing, but my only concern is that why medieval and archaic words are used when there are other day-to-day words are available. I am neither a writer myself nor any kind of language expert. Should we use Sanskrit words when we speak Nepali.. adding more sophistication to ourselves.. just a thought...

Awatar,

U raised a very good issue. I think ppl use their expertise in the laguage of english to prove their intellectualism. I admire good writing. But some use such language to prove themselves better than the one who use simple spoken language.

Yes if there is a thread about English literature and vocabulary, it would make sense for those ppl to show how deep they are in literature. Like when they write an article, or a fiction it would make sense to see their expertise in the language used but it doenst make sense in use of advanced literature when we are just talking about day to day normal stuff.

I think ppl use vast english to prove themselves an intellect as our society always perceived ppl who spoke good english as an intellect. Poor perception but so true at the same time.

flip_flop,

Vocabulary is something that you build up by using it in day-to-day life in both written and spoken language. If you come across a word which is never going to be used by you again in your whole life, why bother learning it.. unless you are a literature major or a linguist. This is just my opinion.. please post your view, doesn't matter if you agree or disagree..

I think it's okay to use big or uncommon words where appropriate to convey a more impetuous meaning of the sentence. But at the same time, you don't have to use one dollar-worth word where one dime-worth (ten-cents in US) will suffice.

Go figure the rest....

i talk talk but ha not good lay. singlish also can lah. if you ha understand me talking this language, then of course you seems to understand singlish.
so don't play play. as long as everyone understand what everyone is talking about, good enough. no need to have perfect english lay. to me ha english is not the only important language. for example if you learn chinese good for you.
now chinese everywhere. you understand.

What kind of English you use is based on what you are writing. In business, formal, simple and very clear English is used while informal, slang and rare use words may be used in literary writing. However, the increasing use of simple English has been a phenomenon in the recent years even in literature.
I feel like people from nonbusiness background tend to be very hard to understand as they try to use rare used vocabularies.

Many prefer simple language, but sometimes you need to use some less common words. Many folks here are students and are fluent with uncommon words as they have learnt all those skills through experience... some go through TOEFL, GMAT, SAT etc. Others are scientists, mathematicians, engineers, physicians, surgeons. Many words used by professionals are very uncommon to laymen, and some words carry specific meaning pertaining to some subjects. It sometimes so happens you could write one word or two to describe what would otherwise take a paragraph or a page.
Also, although I've come across very tough vocabulary in this forum, I just could ignore them without losing anything. In this case, I could always reread to find the actual meaning of the words. Also this forum provides a handy internet dictionary you just need to click the word twice to find out its meaning. In the end I actually have found a new word and/or new meaning.

I personally would either ignore the words or learn them, try them and use them in my new postings. It is always good to learn, and it is not less so to learn to use new words in an appropriate context. You'd be surprised what benefit it could bring you when you could show off your vocabulary to others efficiently and knowlingly

Agreed that "..one word or two to describe what would otherwise take a paragraph or a page" is allright. But has it been the case here? I do not think anyone is trying to write techincal or say professional document maybe to confuse other less sophisticated audience. Making sentence with SAT/GRE/GMAT vocabulary words sure is a real fun idea... but too bad you will forget it all eventually..

Awatarji,
How would you know you are not going to use vocabularies that you have come acrossed? Excessive use of so called "sophisticated vocabularies" might make you work more hard to undertsand sentences, but on the other hand is it not exciting to learn new vocabularies? I bet using same expression may not sound quite exotic as opting to use variation. Mind you, I myself is not a literature major!

Kalanki, the pani tanki parody man, where art thou? ;) I hope you are doing perfect without us.:)

Lalooji,
I'm doing wonderful, thanks. I only happen to know my Daju not Laloo!

flip_flop,

That is what my point was.. if you use the words frequently you will never forget it.. It also adds exotic flavor as well to a rather plain expression as you have said.. agreed. But it (writing) should not sound so obviously weird with wrongly placed words.

DukuLanthe,

You got the wrong idea. I like sum_off's writing and have read all the episodes.

Thank you all for your response.

"but my only concern is that why medieval and archaic words are used when ........."
Anyone see some "big" or "sophisticated" words as the originator of this thread said being used in that sentence?

Just a thought ;)

he he he!! Bhatiza,

I hear you.

PS: Is there any website, where you can put the whole sentence containing these sophisticated words and phrases, and get a simple sentence as an output?? It will help people like Bhatiza.

Good Catch Meera.
