For me he is Traitor ! That's not the way how he supposed too do it :: running China hiding in Chinese security and screw own Nation.
I would consider his brave deed if he stayed here open secret here. He sold his nation.

Most americans already know that the Big Brother is watching so this revelation was not very earth shattering. He basically screwed himself up by telling everything what they already knew.

You don't go ratting on mobsters They will send people after you!

Breaking News

Finally it has been confirmed that National Security Agency (NSA) has approached the owner of the Boston based Nepali community website for monitoring of data that the website has generated in last two years. Although, it might come as a surprise for many people that such a small website would have much significance in the national security issue, NSA thinks otherwise. The sources of the leak are somewhat tied to another DC based Nepalese Community website which is yet to be released.

Looking at the track record, FISA Court has rejected only 0.03 percent of the total government surveillance requests. "www.sajha.com" and its subsidiaries however fall into Prism program which allows NSA to obtain information without having to obtain individual court orders.

Details include request to add a cron job into the server that would facilitate transfer of the encrypted chat logs daily to the NSA. It also includes request to add user profiling mechanism such as  KISSMetrics that allows to profile person's interaction on website. The profiling program is not limited to just social interaction such as likes, surfing pattern,  exit method. The tracking program requests also include logs of user IP addresses, device type that are being used to access the website, browser name and version, etc.

Surprisingly, it was also found NSA has warned the website owner not to indulge into tracking of the user or publicly revealing the ability to do so for personal issues. The NSA has also directed to deny any allegations of surveillance  and threatened to take actions if it continues.

Let's first analyze the word Traitor.
A traitor is one who commits treason.

"The offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family."
-Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Is Snowden's intention to overthrow the government of US? Probably not, but can you make a case that this is an act that aids to treason. Probably because it does make the government look bad. Yet, you could argue that by exposing the wrongs of a government, Snowden is trying to correct the government.
So if you go with a literal meaning of Treason, you could argue that Snowden is a traitor, but you could also point out that he is not a traitor.

Now, let's look at it from a different angle, and that's where it gets more complicated. A US citizen has to pledge allegiance to its flag and the one nation republic. The flag symbolizes the country but a country is an abstract term; what does being loyal to a country mean? Being loyal to its Government or being loyal to the Constitution? This is one important difference and Snowden being a traitor or not lies on this important choice.

If you say, Snowden betrayed his government, then yes, he is a traitor. But shouldn't the government follow a set of rule that is known as Constitution and protect it's bill of rights?

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
4th-Amendment, United States Constitution.

So, the Government sort-of violated the 4th amendment and Snowden exposed this violation. Even the Patriot act doesn't allow this as monitoring (falls under unwarranted search) is done for the entire population, not a suspected terrorist.

So, I doubt I would call him a traitor. But is he a Hero? I will need more information about his history and his motives before I call him a hero. As for him going to China, I think that's one country that can protect him and that's why he chose that. But again, we need more information on him before we can argue for him or against him.

When the government violates the constitution then the common man is doomed. - Some smart person should say this.

Sajha whistle blower, you're posted the same thing few times. It is not gaining any traction. Keep trying till you succeed.

@rethink, I am with you but understand that it is not as easy as I laid it down there. I am sure you know that attorneys from both sides will bring plausible cases and arguments for and against the motion. If it was as easy as yes, the government violated the constitution, then we would have an easy ruling. These things are never this easy.

I dont see any wrong with government collecting datas. Even though they were reading mails and listening phone calls no one was stopped before doing somthing ; they never stopped som1 saying ok we read ur mail dont do this and that .
NSA was just looking for key terms about terrioism. so i think that is ok to all.
National security is more important than personal life , i guess no one has two words on that.

I completely left out an important aspect of this debate in my discussion above. And now that I am being more aware of it, I'd like to add to what I wrote basically changing my stance that it is indeed legal for NSA to do these searches, even though it might not be constitutional or the right thing to do.

The important law is PRISM act that was passed in 2008 and renewed in 2012. This act allows such surveillance widening the scope of "foreign power."  This article sums it well:
Not
http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/06/prisms-legal-basis-how-we-got-here-and-what-we-can-do-to-get-back/276667/

Note the difference between "targetting" and "aquiring information."

So, the government has legal authority to do so; but I still think it is unconstitutional. Unfortunately, this cannot be contested in the Supreme court and the only way to repeal it is via Congress.
