Danes and Racism?

Well I have been living here in Denmark for last 4 years and lots have changes since I first arrived. In the general election 2001 the main subject of election debate was immigration and integration of immigrants but this topic just got muted in the latest general election. The third largest political party is still nationalist( racist??) "The danish peoples party"and most of the political opinions lies in the middle ( neither to the left nor to the right ). But this not only signifies the problem but also shows the political will to tackle it.

Having said that . Yes Danes are very nationalist but not necessarily racist. But racism here , suprisingly is widespread among foriegners, which of course doesnot gets that much press coverage. I myself would rather shop in a danes shop than in a turkish shop. Some of americans expats living here think they are the best group of immigrants living here. While somalis are looked down upon.

No I am trying to defend Danes and Denmark , I just want to say that Denmark also has all the problems like any other country.

Racism you experience also depends upon your knowledge of the country and the language and of course your qualification( educational and professional). When you gradually learn the language and the society,then you will also discover the ugly part of society no matter where ever you are. Better you are qualified , more alert you are of your rights , and more discrimination you experience..

But I have never seen( read) more racism and racist slurs than SAJHA.COM

well said rai...i ve learnt that ppl love to stereotype around here..if one goes around listening what is being said here then the french are arrogant, so are the germans, the danes, the dutch along with the belgians are racist..blah blah..as if we nepalis were perfect ( hello ..ever seen how the ppl in the valley treat our madhise compatriots from madhesh?, one doesnt even bother to say " dai, tapai"..ppl go "madhise timro or worse ; tuh ,tero"..what do you call that ? is this not an extreme case of racism...it is a zillion times worse than the racism one finds here..

my mother had a friend from niger ..her husband was swiss and was posted in pokhara for work, she being a franco-phone and therefore a non english speaker, learnt nepali pretty fast, she understood nepali everytime when ppl used to discuss behind her back (but in her vicinity) whether she was a human being or kind of monkey....we might not be racists regarding the white but we are very racists to others..

And another thing, as far as I know, no one from UK has ever spoken in this thread. I know there are lots of sajhaites in UK. There once was a thread some months back which was about the Nepalis in UK. As UK is also in Europe, UK sajhaites should not hesitate to share their voice here, as this thread will be more vibrant with the bulk of UK Nepalis. Or are they thinking "Europe" here means only "Eurozone"?

I completely agree with 99com007a and Rai. I have seen quite a lot of racist nepalese to say the least in Nepal, outside of Nepal and here in sajha. I have a foreign friend who used to visit this site regularly, but just recently he got so tired of reading the same old aggressive, racists, hostile comments among nepalese that he now has a completely different outlook on us.

If you like to know about British people, there's one book called 'The English' written by Jeremy Paxman. Very witty but in depth explanation of English culture, English psyche, English everything and that too- comparision of old and new English generation. You can buy that from AOl.COM for less than 20 euros. I got one copy of that from a friend of mine and enjoyed a lot. Just to help for your cause. :)
