From MSNBC:

WASHINGTON - Federal health officials worked Friday to find the source of a multistate E. coli outbreak and warned consumers that even washing the suspect spinach won’t kill the sometimes-deadly bacteria.

One person died and dozens of others were sickened in the ten-state outbreak, linked by Food and Drug Administration officials to bagged spinach.

Most of us tend to cook the spinach.. really good. We, most Nepalese, barely eat this vegtable with salad. Are we still in danger?

Captain Haddock, you beat me! :)

I'll miss my spinach as it is good for eyesight.

Batuwa: I think if you cook it to a certain temperature, you are ok. The FDA website doesn't say what that temperature is - it says for 70 degrees Celcius for beef and other meat but does not list anything specific for spinach.

I expect Nepalese-sytle spinach is likely to be in the safe temperature range given the way it is prepared. Since I had a bit of freetime on my hands today, I sent the FDA an email asking them what temperature spinach should be cooked at to be safe from e.Coli and I'll be happy to post their reply here if and when I get it. :)

Flip Flop - LOL. You'll just have to do with carrots for now :)

Hush - I am less worried about dying than about spending half the night in the toilet :)

Hey Mr. Popeye!

Be careful now, eleven States have already traced back the outbreak of E. Coli to SPINACH.
I don't wanna see you in the graveyard of cartoon characters anytime soon.

Hehehe

Flip - How on earth did you find this thread ...he he

True, all the perils of eating out. A bit of extra pre-caution doesn't harm I suppose although as someone mentioned if you cook your veggies Nepalese style, you might be a bit less prone to it.

:)

Yes, it is. Infact I even stopped eating Greens after I heard about the outbreak of E Coli in spinach.

I guess I have to rely on my carrots at the moment! :-)
