Fri Jan 28,12:11 AM ET South Asia - AFP

KATHMANDU (AFP) - Nepal has closed two offices in Kathmandu associated with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, Tibetan and foreign ministry sources said.

The government has closed the office of the Dalai Lama's representative and the Tibetan Refugee Welfare Office, a Tibetan source said.

"Following an official notification of the home ministry, we have shut down all the offices relating to the Tibetan refugees from this week," a senior welfare office staffer told AFP on Friday.

The welfare office looks after more than 20,000 Tibetan refugees who left their homeland after the Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 amid a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

The Chinese embassy has frequently lodged strong protests with the Nepalese government for permitting the Tibetan office to operate in Nepal in the name of the Dalai Lama.

Nepal, which is careful not to antagonise its giant neighbour, recognises Beijing's rule over Tibet.

A senior foreign ministry official said the Tibetan offices had not registered as required under Nepalese law.

The Tibetan Refugee Welfare Office (TRWO) had been helping several hundred destitute Tibetans who fled from Tibet across Himalayan passes to head to the northern Indian hill resort of Dharamsala where the Dalai Lama lives in exile.

After crossing into Nepal, the Tibetans are provided with travel documents by the United Nations (news - web sites) refugee agency (UNHCR) to help them to travel to Dharamsala.

"The closing of the TRWO may be a big problem for the Tibetan refugees fleeing from the roof of the world for their political freedom," a diplomatic source said.

MAnab jui "For your information, Dalai Lama is one of the richest guys i am sure, his passion is to collect Rolex watches i believe...............all that on someone else's moeny and he calls himself a destitute?????" I think he has a passion to fix watches not buy one. He has always been intrested in watches since he was a kid. He is the "richest" how can you say that he is the richest when the money he gets is used for Tibetan? I guess people just put their opinions more than facts :-(
I don't think any country that is in exile can be on their own, human nature..........

Whatever, it was a bad decision by the Nepalese govt to buckle under pressure from any quarter to jeoprodize delicate diplomatic balance.
Dalai Lama as a Budhist spritual Leader should be allowed to travel and preach in Nepal if not better than at par with all those Babas and Matas. It was already a great injustice to politicalize the issue and prevent HH Dalai Lama from visiting the birth place of Buddha, now this decision to close the sole representative office is even more condemnable. However, as per our policy to disallow any hostile acts to our neighbors, we are already committed to it, and if there is any specific threat they must be defused legally not by blanket restriction. Nepalese effort to make one party pleased at the cost of antagonizing others will not be in greater interest of the nation and its populace.
(Personal opinion from a limited background)

Manab, for your information, The Tibetan Refugee Welfare Office (TRWO) is NOT a Nepali government funded organisation. They are run through international aid and funding, and indirectly under the UN refugee program. You should be more concerned about corrupt businessman defaulting on the loans, red-tapism in the government offices, bribery everywhere , the lavish lifestyle of government officers which defy their annual income. The Tibetan Refugee Welfare Office (TRWO) is not involved in supporting Tibetan businessmen in Nepal, but facilitate in the placement of Tibetan refugees fleeing religious and social persecution under opprasive Chinese rule. If only everybody do their homework before writing about issue they have no idea about !

Hell with the center but if Enigma is right it is a tragedy for those who are poor , but looking at all the rich bhoteys in nepal I think the gov't was right to close down the center even if it is international supported.
I think if nepal had a choice it would let Dalai Lama to come to nepal to preach but a country like ours has problems of it's own, the govt can't do it. So, why worry about things like that, I know Dalai Lama is good person, I had a chance to see him once, He is a Holy man. What have the tibetens contributed in nepal????? except their sons and daughters are flaunting their riches and family values, no shame, the boys all they do is fight and the girls all look like hookers in those dresses anc corrupting nepali societies.

NeoMatrix, are you one of those who vent their frustrations on a discussion board or get all hyped up to start a fistfight, and then disappear soon after, at drinking institutions? If so you are a wuss, and if you are able to get a picture of your soon to happen Bhutanese bashing please share it with us so we can appreciate you backing up your big talk with big action.

I'm a Tibetan Buddhist born and raised in Nepal, from my great grandfather, we've always been a Nepali. I'm as supportive as you guys for our government to shut down all unnessary political distractions. Please do not confuse us with Tibetan exiles, though our religion might be same. I do not consider you as an Indian (If I'm ignorant like NeoMatrix....I'd call Dhotis). If you go and start distinguishing cast here, you only prove your ignorance and stupidity. If we get rich, person like Neo get jealous. Go and see any Nepali regions with Buddhist dominance, what have our goverment done for centuries....NOTHING. They still live it's like 600 years ago. So hate nobody when they sweat their own balls to feed their children and become rich. And Neo and Manab...I don't give a rat ass for Dalai Lama, cause he's not a Nepali. That's the bottom line. It's a shame .Sajha is so supportive to discourage racial and cast discrimination and here Neo is such a bad example. They need to ban your ass.

bob marley,
felt a desperate urge to write, i just want you to know ( and i suppose you know) that its not all nepalese who think so negatively of tibetan presence in nepal as certain ppl who post their messages around here . i have deep respect for buddism and for the nepalese of tibetan origin in nepal. i genuinely feel that the tibetan civilization is a very big part of nepal and not to forget the fact that its an element that provides a lot of international recognition and attention to this country. i really feel sorry for the actions undertaken recently by the gouvernement of nepal and the way some ppl sound happy about what happened.

Bob Marley:

I share the same background as you do. But I have a deep respect for Dalai Lama and the people. There is much to learn from them and have contributed alot to Nepal. But I respect your opinion.

And you are right. There has not been much done for the people of Himalaya Region. But there is nothing much to expect from present situation.

Bob Marley,

Thanks for speaking up against NeoMatrix. I thought I wouldn't even waste my time responding to his antics, but I just had to. I am glad you have, and I concur with you fully.

As far as Dalai Lama is concerned, I really don't have an opinion on him. I am a Tamang and consider myself a Buddhist. With what little knowledge I have about the man, it seems like he is an admirable man with distinct qualities. However, I am uneasy about anyone who shares both a political and religious position.

B_D.

if this means that Nepal will reap benefits economically and aid-wise from China, then it's worth supporting.

jalle je bhane pani tibetans in nepal and else where are probably the richest refguees in the world with the support of western countries, not out of genuine feeling for their freedom, but for political regions, coz, it's china, and they have every reason to support those who are against the chinese rule. but the bidambana here is that whenever a few tibetans are deported to china or their office is closed, then it becomes such a big issue, getting coverage in all prominent media, and drawing attention of major human rights organisations and western governments, but when tens of thousands of bhutanese of nepali origin are forcibly driven away from their country, when the autocartic bhutanese regime with the tacit approval of india delays their right to return their country for more than 15 yrs, then that never gets that kind of attention. jahan pani paisa wala kai chalchha, haina ra sathiharu? compared to bhutanese refugees, tibetan refugees are living in luxury, with many kuires sponsoring them, so that we have sons and daughters of tibetan refugees flaunting their riches. how sad, look at the bhutanese refugees, khudunabari ko camp ma khumchera baseka chhan jaba ki tibetan haru, well they are everywhere ktm, delhi, europe and america.

just a vent...

raute
very true of what you say regarding the lack of attention the bhutanese get as in comparison to ppl of tibetan origin, but really are they to be compared ? the cirumstances are different and anyway its not us who decide, if ppl of tibetan ancestry can climb their way up in life so be it , they re kids are nepalese not tibetans . i dont quite think the two situations are comparable one to the other

Raute:

This issue somehow relates to another topic being discussed in KING JIGME SPEAKS. While going thru all the discussions, it seems apparently clear that this idea of bringing revolution in Bhutan for Nepali origin was the idea of Girja dude and may be other politicians.

My question is if that shit does not work in our own backyard, do you expect this to bring any good result. I think Bhutanese people of Nepali Origin got into same problem as we are right now in Nepal. Ordinary gaule have to flee village just like Nepali Bhutanese fled their land.

I dont understand why do we need to butt in at the first place. May be there is something we should learn from this....Just a thought...

I agree with both BobMarley and NeoMatrix, I don't see any venting out in his words like SaveEarth is claiming, I think SAveEarth has some issues, you the one who seems to be wanting to fistfight anyway,
it was a sad thing that the goverment had to do this, but to tell you the truth, we have bigger problems at home to solve than worry about few tibetn's crying about Tibet (I know I am going to be called names in this Sajha, I don't care that is my view,I know it is a sad lost for the great people of Tibet, but look at it this way, did you ever get your candy back from that big guy in your class or school who asked to eat your lunch???), Guy's look at the picture, CHINA is a BigTymer in this world,
who do you think is going to make China give back tibet to his holiness dalai lama......Maybe America??? america couldn't do crap even if China was to come to Taiwan.....

So stop argueing about things of no concern, Nepal ma katro kanda macchi sakyo ,, tibbati sukumbasi ko k kura garai vo ra.............. 2,4 barsha ma Nepali pani Sukumbashi huncha hola yestai taal ho vaney ta...........

China ko pressure bina to hudaina theyo jasto ta lageko theyo malai. It has nothing to do with being registered or not, it was all about the dictation from the concerned Embassy:
