In a country where more than 25% population is below the poverty line ( 2007 census), how is making of these expensive movies year after year justified in Bollywood and India? India truly is a "capitalist" pig in that sense.
Trivia: Almost all recent movies by SRK + KJ (MNIK being the latest) worth more than 500 million indian rupees. And it doesn't end there, there are many more productions which compete for expensive movies every year. Upcoming movie Kites made under the Roshan Banner is worth a staggering 30 million USD! This is ludicrous in my humble opinion.

supply vs demand, my friend. do you know the population of INDIA. it's more than 1 Billion. and India is one of the most developing country and movie is number 1 entertainment source in India. now imagine the potential of how much company can earn from producing a good movie.

Supply and demand, that is right. Who cares about the poverty? Poverty is not the problem or issue of movie industries, they are not running a government office but a for profit organization. Think positively, they are spending something and will go down to general population and providing low cost entertainment as dolphin said and keeping away to import other source of entertainment and currency is staying home.

pret atma: i don't know how poverty and movie industry are every related to begin with this discussion. many of the lower class are entering into middle class because county is growing economically. don't you think those middle class families can afford to shell out 100 ruppess for a movie that has abhishek bachhan or salman khan with few good songs shot in Switzerland or US. imagine even if 100 million (that is 10% of population) go watch a movie. that is 100 * 10 = 1 billion ruppee revenue. do you even wanna account the revenue generated in dollar in US or europe. phucking indians are everywhere now. no disrespect .hehe

This is the irony of this world!

PRET ATMA THE GENERAL RULE OF ECONOMY IS: SPENDING HELPS MORE THEN SAVING. IN TERMS OF HOW IT HELPS GENERAL (POOR) POPULATION: IT TAKES FEW HUNDRED PEOPLE TO MAKE A MOVIE. THERE ARE FEW THOUSAND MOVIE THEATER IN INDIA ALONE. LOT OF SMALL BUSINESS FLOURISHES IN AND AROUND THOSE THEATER. YOU SEE WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY. THESE FEW PEOPLE WITH LOT OF MONEY INVEST IT IN MOVIES RATHER THEN KEEPING IN SAVING ACCOUNT. IN TURN LOT OF RICH AND POOR PEOPLE GETS A JOB. ITS SIMPLE MAN. MOST OF ALL THE MONEY INVESTED IN MOVIE IS PERSONAL SO HOW THEY SPEND IT IS THEIR CHOICE. JASKO SAKTI USAIKO VAKTI VANEKO SUNE CHA SATHI LE. TETIKAI TATERA HUNCHA.

Pret Atma I have to say your thread is not as nonsensical as I have seen around in Sajha, and no matter how many people attest to the fact that Sajha has gone down in standard, these kinds of nonsensical thread had always been there, although good threads and good contributors have eloped...sort of brain drain. Hence I am venting frustration here and there. While you have full right to create the thread, you should also expect to get derogatory comments on your thread if the thread has not much meaning. I mean, sure the money discrepancy is huge but that's a well known fact all over the world.

Bollywood is one of the most successful industry in India. The more profit it does it produces it brings more employment and more money to the people who are involved in the industry ..Right from the Stars( who are over paid i agree, but thats just the beast of the nature) to the spot boys to the movie theatre owners and to the street vendor who sells peanuts outside the theatre. So Whatever it takes to make the movie successful financially is being done may that be shooting songs in geneva or Melbourne, if it's working then they are doing it right......And thats how it is done ....Capitalism at its best...

Does the money staying in bank will help the general public, pretatma?? Something is better than nothing? Do you agree on it? Yes, you need to be more positive as I said. The actor paid too much ? That is right but they are paying hefty taxes too, it is not like Nepal, you earn and do not pay a dime. Have you taken any micro and macro economics class? My point money is not sitting idle but moving around, tax collected makes different. Be positive, think positive.

I see your point pret aatma....but ur making your argument with a naive assumption that the filmmakers/producers are exploiting people by making money from them.....the point ur missing here is that film-making is an organized industry in India...much like in the US....the industry employees hundreds of thousands of people ranging from the actors to technicians, distributors, cinema hall employees and so on. Take this into perspective....there are thousands of cinema halls in India that employee hundreds of thousands of people....also the music industry in India predominantly is based on the film industry.......i don't know what argument u were trying to make about capitalism in India....its a well-known fact.....most countries in the world r trying to move towards capitalism....and India is on the forefront of this endeavor......if u are completely against capitalism then that's a whole different topic altogether.....but the fact that u have singled out the entertainment industry tells me that you do not understand the underlying dynamics that drive an industry's success.....its not just that there are these bunch of producers who invest money and make a whole lot of profit out of the hard earned money of the people of a country still fighting with poverty......instead, thousands, perhaps millions, of people share the benefits either directly or indirectly and there's a net benefit for society as a whole....why are you not concerned about the success of the service and manufacturing industry in India???why do feel that the entertainment industry being successful is a problem???feel free to comment

Whenever there is financial instability or depression movies sell out more. Its the same everywhere in the world. In US, when it was going through depression, that was the time movies were sold the most. And, although movies make money, it is an art form. Making a movie is not a joke. And if anyone makes money out of it then why should it be a fuss.
