One huge scientific experiment being launched Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008
is described as an Alice in Wonderland investigation into the makeup of
the universe, or dangerous tampering with Nature that could spell
Doomsday for the Earth. The first beams of protons will be fired around
the 27-kilometer (17-mile) tunnel at the launch Wednesday to test the
controlling strength of the world's largest superconducting magnets. It
will still be several weeks before beams traveling in opposite
directions are brought together in collisions that some skeptics fear
could create micro "black holes" they theorize could endanger the planet
it has been called an Alice in Wonderland investigation into the makeup
of the universe — or dangerous tampering with nature that could spell
doomsday.
The multibillion-dollar Large Hadron Collider will explore the tiniest
particles and come ever closer to re-enacting the big bang, the theory
that a colossal explosion created the universe.
The project has attracted researchers of 80 nationalities, some 1,200
of them from the United States, which contributed $531 million of the
project's price tag of nearly $4 billion.
Following are five facts about the 10 billion Swiss franc (5 billion pounds) Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will smash together particles at close to the speed of light after its start-up on Wednesday at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN):
* Though built to study the smallest known building blocks of all things -- known as particles -- the LHC is the largest and most complex machine ever made. It has a circumference of 27 km (17 miles) and lies 100 metres (330 feet) under the ground, straddling French and Swiss territory.
* At full power, trillions of protons will race around the LHC accelerator ring 11,245 times a second, travelling at 99.99 percent the speed of light. It is capable of engineering 600 million collisions every second.
* When two beams of protons collide, they will generate temperatures more than 100,000 times hotter than the heart of the sun, concentrated within a miniscule space. Meanwhile, the cooling system that circulates superfluid helium around the LHC's accelerator ring keeps the machine at minus 271.3 degrees Celsius (minus 456.34 degrees Fahrenheit).
* To collect data of up to 600 million proton collisions per second, physicists and scientists have built devices to measure the passage time of a particle to a few billionths of a second. The trigger system also registers the location of particles to millionths of a metre.
* The data recorded by the LHC's big experiments will fill around 100,000 dual-layer DVDs each year. Tens of thousands of computers around the world have been harnessed in a computing network called "The Grid" that will hold the information.
I was listening to NPR the other day. They were talking about the people who are scared stiff of the experiments being done at CERN, particularly the one being posted above. It seems these people have minimal or no scientific knowledge whatsoever involved in these experiments, hence, are running around like a headless chicken all frightened.
I bet it would be interesting to see the outcome of the experiment. Another milestone in the name of human intelligence. Btw, if we are to die we all shall die together, with arms around each other!

Could French prophet Nostradamus actually have predicted that the Large Hadron Collider might produce a black hole or strangelet particle that could swallow earth or cause some other great disaster?
Did Nostradamus warn us from 400 years ago about "nuclear physicists gone wild" creating a Doomsday Machine? Could this be the cause the December 2012 Mayan calendar destruction of earth?
The main purpose of the Large Hadron Collider, we have already said, is to produce anti-matter and black holes and conditions just after the Big Bang.
However there are those would theorise that these black holes that are created and which contain the densest matter in the universe, will plummet to the very core of the earth. Then, slowly but surely they will grow, one particle at a time but at an ever accelerating rate.
Scientists have estimated that a stable black hole at the centre of the earth would consume not only France, but the whole planet in the very short time span of between 4 minutes and 30 seconds and 7 minutes.
In the above quatrain, Nostradamus mentions Geneva, and the "contrary RAYPOZ" could refer to a "contrary positive ray".
The Collider uses rays of protons positive charged, and "contrary" refers to a collision of two proton beams.
This ray will exterminate everything. Does that mean an earth swallowing black hole may be created? Or maybe there will be some kind of giant nuclear explosion from a black hole or strangelet particle that is created from it.
"Saturn turns from gold to iron" surely refers to a transmutation of elements, or maybe even a black hole created that will fly off into space and land on the planet Saturn, turning Saturn into a black hole.
"There will be signs in the sky before this". We have had an unusually high amount of UFO sightings this year with no let-up it seems. Could this be a warning of impending disaster? It seems like there are messages everywhere.
Whatever the outcome, we are all hoping to wake up on Thursday. Do you think we the world will end on Wednesday? Is there anything we can do?
All this time I’ve been saying that we’re living in the future, and now I’ve been made to look like a damn fool.
It turns out that this isn’t the future at all. It’s only, like, the present. Or maybe even the past. God, I feel so trashy. It’s like when I spent all that time walking around in my cool sweat pants, and then it turned out that sweat pants were, you know, never cool.
How do I know it’s not the future now? Because pretty soon a huge new piece of science may make time travel possible. Not from now to the past, but from the future to now…making us the past. It’s too much! It’s like we’re stuck at the lame table in the lunchroom!

This summer will see the completion of the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, “the most powerful atom smasher ever built.” Now, as usual, this atom smasher is all about studying the weirdest, most dizzyingly small pieces of existence, but the most relevant upshot of this (as far as JGordon is concerned) has to do with time travel.
Some scientists think that when the energies of the LHC are concentrated into a subatomic particle, the fabric of space and time—“spacetime,” to save a valuable wordbreak—may do something embarrassing, like rip its pants. (Check out a link or two on spacetime if you feel like getting punched in the lobe.) This rip in the pants of spacetime can be characterized, rather unfortunately, as a wormhole.

Or, really, as a shortcut through time, since we’re all kind of traveling through time anyway. The idea, as best I can manage it, is that one end of the wormhole exists when it was created, the present (I like to think of this as “inside the pants”), and the other end is accelerated to some point in the future (“Outside the pants,” if you will).
No, I take it back. As much as I like to think of the future as outside my pants, maybe it’s better to think of it like this: We, in this god-awful, no flying cars present, somewhere in the left leg of the pants. The future, in all its pill-meal, robot-pet glory exists in the right pant leg. Now, to reach this corduroy promise land, we could just walk up the left leg and down the right leg like a bunch of saps (or wait for it to come to us, seeing as how we’re dealing with time) or we could build a Large Hadron Collider, something that could punch a hole right through the fabric of the pant leg, so we could just hop from one leg to the other, without screwing around on all that inseam.
What this means, if we’re talking about time again, and not pants, is that we haven’t so much created a time machine as a tunnel through time. This theory also explains why we haven’t had any travelers from the future yet: because while they might have the technology to keep their end of the wormhole open and traversable (which would require a sort of energy we mostly only theorize about at the moment), they can only go as far back as the original creation of the wormhole, which is now (or possibly this summer). My own theory as to why no tourists from the future have shown up here is a little more simple—why would anyone from the future want to come here? It’d be like someone who lives in Disneyworld (Mickey Mouse?) going to Fargo for vacation.
But who knows? Maybe this summer we can all get our pictures taken by people from the future.

Geneva, 25 August 2008. CERN has today announced the success of the
second and final test of the Large Hadron Collider’s beam
synchronization systems which will allow the LHC operations team to
inject the first beam into the LHC. Friday evening 22 August, a single
bunch of a few particles travelled down the transfer line from the
Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator to the LHC. After a period
of optimization, one bunch was kicked up from the transfer line into
the LHC beam pipe and steered counter-clockwise about 3 kilometres
around the LHC. “Thanks to a fantastic team, both the clock-wise and
counter-clockwise tests went without a hitch. We look forward to a
resounding success when we make our first attempt to send a beam all
the way around the LHC,” said Lyn Evans, LHC Project Leader. Both the
counter-clockwise and clockwise tests are part of the preparations to
ready the LHC, the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, for the
eventual acceleration and collision of two beams at an energy of 5 TeV
per beam. This unprecedented event is foreseen to take place by end
2008.
