flyhigh, There was a doctor (forgot his name.. i think it is Dhurba Man Pradhan) who had his clinic in Blue-Cross Hospital/Nursing home near Dasarath Rangashala. I think he is pretty good psychologist (one who prescribes medication). laatobuddhi and others, please do not make fun of this issue (or divert it). It is really a very serious "medical" issue to concerned people. I hope whoever is having "problem" find a way out of it. Thanks. BKB

Flyhigh, there is good website called google.com please try to use it before you start a new thread here too. If i were you i would start looking up for the list of hospitals in Nepal, then the departments and the doctors. People in Nepal think that you only go to a shrink when you are a "PAGAL". Check out the following links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hospitals_in_Nepal http://www.teachinghospital.org.np/p.html http://nepal.usembassy.gov/medical_practioners.html

There must be some 60 registered psychiatrists in Nepal. Psychotherapy is still a relatively unpractised stuff in Nepal. I guess there might be few qualified psychotherapist but they tend to practice clinical psychiatry( where the money is ) The patient population is looking for pills to treat their mind and it will take a long while before they start trusting the talkin g therapy, whihc in itself is a long tedious process will come into common practice. The problems are less specialised services, complaince issue for the patients, time and money affordability and the social stigma to be exposed long to mental health care exposure etc..The mental health needs are so immense but when it comes to prioritising we are still in the era of treating with pharmacotherapy where the psychiatrist role is primarily sought for. I wish there were programmes promoting talking therapies by psychotherapist.

gwala,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. your perception is shared by many (including me). I have first hand knowledge in psychotherapy both in Nepal and in USA. By psychotherapy I mean counseling by psychologist (or any other trained person). The person who prescribes drugs is psyhchiatrist. It is universally considered that a depressed person needs both medication and counseling for an extended period of time. (Perhaps depression becomes more than a "disease" it may become a habit, like smoking which you want to quit).
I think in USA (or other developed/western countries) psychotherapist/counselors make more money. But in Nepal perhaps you are right there is more money in psychaitry (drugs). And since Nepal (thankfully!) has not become individualistic like USA, an average person can still hope to have support structure (friends/family) to talk to. That is ALL the counseling is for. Here (USA) I go to counseling now and then. The counselor tells me things I already know (I need to study.... make time table to get things done... blah blah blah.... ). many times I feel the counseling session could make me more depressed (I already know what I need to do... still I could/would not do those things). Please correct me if I am wrong but most of the grown-ups may feel that. They KNOW what they need to do, just would not or could not do it. (e.g. need to save money... work hard..... QUIT SMOKING..... eat healthy.... exercise).... "depressed" people consiously or unconsioulsy take these things to heart... and think they are failure and would always remain failure.
Lastly.. gwala.... what is society.... my definition is: it is you and me + him/her. My humble request is let us understand what "depression" is (and could be) and IS NOT... and talk with others (him/her). Isn't that how we change old perceptions in society. It is so easy to go into depression. (One of my new close friend told me... he thought I would be the last person to be suffering from depression... I guess I have learned to live with depression) I am still not very comfortable telling that I had and still suffering from depression.... far too many people know me by this nick... but what the heck; there are some moments when I feel great that despite having depression, I am doing pretty well.
Thanks for reading. :)

Just a correction bkb, Clinical psychologists, who are not considered psyciatrists can also prescribe drugs. There are many fields in psychology, counseling psychology being one of them. Please do not confuse counseling psychology as being the sole field of psychology.

Thanks for a good thread...I am dealing with this issue in my family, and this is where sajha really adds value as a place to learn and share.
And kudos for shutting down that jerk who had posted something completely irrelevant. I guess it is all fun and games for some..until it happens to them or someone they care about.

thanks for sharing bkb
I cant agree with you more, the aim and outcome of counselling provided in the developed society lacking the social support system is much compensated in our society with strongly bonded family support structure. However we are then talking of different worlds, the psychological definition of stresses and depression may be pwerceived different altogether and so would be the management strategies. You have pointed out a very genuine difference which we tend to ignore or take for granted in general , the spiritual and emotional strength of the oriental society holds a lot to resist depression in general through the famiy values and bonded social structure.
My understanding is counselling being the generic term for psychotherapy and there would be a number of cognitive and behavioural models specifically tailored to be applied for particular psychiatric problems.
Coming back to flyhigh's original query, who is looking for a psychiatrist in nepal,There's psychiatry department in most of the Kathmandu based hospitals, and the teaching hospitals across the country. I am sure the qualified ones anywhere (few dozens in nepal) should be able to address the problem you looking for, rather than hunting for recommended' good'psychiatrist unless its a diagnostic dilemma (furthermore they may be least accessible and have less time for you) And the private practice is all floursihing, each town has some psychaitrists coming from the kathmandu on a weekly/monthly basis.Again this depends on the problem and where the concerned person lives.
Acupuncture, can't say more about this, so opinionated, u hear good and bad, it depends on how much you believe in acupuncture in general, however acutherapies lack evidence to support most of what is claimed to achieve.I think using it for insomnia , anxiety , depression might be of help , basically claims to alter the chemical pathway what the medication does, but I would think you should use it to complement psychiatric meds/ psychotherapy rather than being solely dependent on it to expect long term control of your problems. So many acupuncture centres in Ktm, u need to research if they provide specialist paychiatric help.

thank you guys for sharing your views.
There are so many families in Nepal where disease like depression is still unknown. And if anybody shows abnormal symptoms like in depression, they take it as being mental. I wish people knew about it more.

Nepal Hypnosis can be the best destination for mental health care in Kathmandu. It provides complete care of psychosocial health by using alternative healing techniques, such as, integrated clinical hypnotherapy, healing touch, Gestalt psychotherapy, psychosocial counseling, past life regression, age regression, inner child healing, creative movement therapy (CMT / DMT), crystal healing, aura healing, neuro linguistic programming (NLP), emotional empowerment technique (EET), emotional freedom technique (EFT), redikall healing and more. @ flyhigh... Mind is Prana; hence, mind can be completely brought under control by controlling Prana. I highly recommend the subject doing Pranayama, and mantra meditation every single day. Along with this, sirsasana is very good for treating depression. You can learn these techniques in Nepal in any authentic Yoga center. I do not prescribe taking anti-depressant for these kind of mental disease because they do have serious side-effects. You can easily treat depression within couple of months. I don't know much about schizophrenia, but many mental diseases are cured gradually with continuous practice of Asana, Pranayama, and meditation followed in that order. You need to understand that body is made of five elements viz. fire, air, space, water, and earth. And within our body, there are five types of vital energy that makes our body function properly viz. Prana, Apana, Vyana, Samana, and Udana. All diseases no matter physical or mental are the result of imbalances in these elements and vital energy.
