I take you back to the 90s, when Nepal was just a toddler, crawling on the floor of democracy. The political leaders were living below poverty line and had no money even to travel on the bus so they used to walk. Not all but most of them. I still remember, one of Nepali Congress’ important leaders asked my dad to pay for his tea right outside my house because he had no money. Manyt years later the same guy got behind bars, proven guilty on bribery and corruption. Sigh! So much for money.Anyway, one of my uncles was affiliated and was very active in politics. His ideologies was strongly influenced by the rightist, Nepali Congress. Everyday there were around 40-100 political people pouring in every morning for a cup of coffee at his place. You can say it was a Mela every morning. Tea for free with some cookies. Who doesn’t want it.
I am not complaining about them. My story is not about these cadets. My tale is about the head of the cadets, “the boss” Mr. Sushil Koirala. I presume no one really cared about him back in those days. Perhaps because the entire puppetry of the party was run by the then chairman, Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala. But the course of the wind changed and in 2014 at the age of 74 he became the Prime Minister of Nepal. There is a saying,” Dons and Cons don’t retire”. Just kidding !!! it’s actually Dons and Politicians never retires. This is the right time to share a story.
Once in one of the morning Melas I have mentioned earlier, maybe Paush/ Magh , Mr Sushil Koirala came to my uncle’s place for a quick meeting. Apparently, I happen to be around talking to my uncle how bad my school life is ( well I was a kid, what do you think I ll complain about…relationship? My bf? Even if I had one, for god’s sake I won’t discuss it with him). I was about to leave when Mr. Koirala called me and said, “ Nani, my coat button came off, can you please ask someone to stitch it for me”. Over smart me, I replied, “ I ll do it for you no problem”.
Well I had only seen him on tv, and it was a big thing that now I have personally met him. So I took his grey tweed coat to my room. My didi got in the room and asked what I am upto and I explained the story. Then the devil got into my mind, I got curious. I wanted to see what all he got in his pocketSo I slipped my hand inside the right pocket of his coat, I found some papers folded and kept. It was of no business for me. Then I slipped my hand inside the left pocket and I felt something sticky. “Eww” was my response but I didn’t let it go and pull it out. Big scream from my sister when with a big grin on my face, I showed her, THE DENTURES of Mr. Sushil Koirala in my hands and I really don’t know why would he keep it like that. I quickly put it back and tucked the button and gave back the coat to him without saying a word. He did say thank you and I smiled.
I never told this to anyone except couple of my family members. But now since he is the PM, I take the glory to say, “ Mero haath Ma Pradhan Mantri ko daant”.

I keep thinking about how that coat may have been patched up so many times, wierd thing is I imagining it patched up with rotis. As a kid i always thought they looked like rotis for some reason. Anyways forget that. Great stuff. Look forward to reading more of your writings.

Funny , if it is a real story :) And, i could not stop myself commenting on this, although it is not related to your main 'humor' story: "The political leaders were living below poverty line and had no money even to travel on the bus so they used to walk. Not all but most of them. I still remember, one of Nepali Congress’ important leaders asked my dad to pay for his tea right outside my house because he had no money. Manyt years later the same guy got behind bars, proven guilty on bribery and corruption. Sigh!" This is the story we hear many times thoughout the country. My dad/uncle also have paid/offered tea, meals and travel expenses to the leaders of 'banned parties' those days, but i don't think any of the leaders asked my dad to pay for their meal or tea, especially the party's central leaders. My dad, and i know many others, would offer them help out of respect and there would be a feeling that "यिनी हरु प्रजातन्त्रको लागि घर/परिवार केहि नभनी लागेका छन् , आफुले जागिर छोडेर तेसरी हिड्न सकिन्न , सकेको सहयोग त गर्नै पर्यो नि " | Actually those feelings were based on the true situations, that many of those people could have easily gotten atleast 'sahayak mantra' if they had renounced their anti-panchayat politics, and getting a job as school/campus teacher or even government job would not have been a big deal for them. तर प्रजातन्त्र आएपछि सरकारमा गएर मति बिग्रेर के के भए भए | भबिस्य कसले पो देख्न सक्छ र |

Nepalilaure This is a real story and I have no intention of hurting anyone's reputation or image but just sharing what had happened:) I have seen politicians closely and sorry to say most of them have personal vested interest to fulful that is why they get into politics But like you said...we havent seen the future....things might change for nepal ....Amen!!
